America is a land where people are free to make the choices they want. Whether it’s creating a business or simple as choosing what to wear. However, in todays society, it is more than choosing what one pleases. Due to advertisements, society has demanded for people to own certain things only to be accepted. In America, people’s social status is determined by what one owns due to advertisements. Advertisements have affected the way people are looked at due to the competition amongst business, what they encourage people to buy and how they come up with great advertisements. Many stores today have installed cameras to mostly study people’s behavior and not solely to catch shoplifters on camera. Malcom Gladwell is the author of “The Science of Shopping,” and in his reading, he explains that cameras are used to study what people like, what they don’t like and how long one stays at a section. “Where the cameras go and how many trackers Paco deploys depends on exactly what the store wants to know about its shoppers.” (95)By studying people, owners can determine what needs to be improve in order for their store to sell more. In addition, using cameras can also determines what should be advertised. Owners will know what’s currently trending and suggest to their customers that if they purchase their products, then they will become popular by proving to society that that person can afford. With the use of cameras, it is likely to say that it can benefit both the company and the customers. To explain, customers will be satisfied the stores are promoting what they want and the company will be benefitting from the sells. In other words, cameras are used to determine what it is what the customers want and display it all over the
