When one thinks of the term ‘social unrest,’ they may affiliate it with the modern age; an event only taking place in the 21st century. In reality, both social and spiritual unrest has taken place sporadically throughout history for thousands of years. Any documented event in history that’s involved some sort of protest, or riot is usually labelled as a social, or civil, unrest. The Italian Renaissance is a significant point in history that ended up being the ultimate outcome of a social and spiritual unrest.
The Renaissance, which means ‘rebirth,’ began in Italy during the mid 14th century. It was a movement of cultural revival that rediscovered the Ancient Greek and Roman literary and art style. What led to the Renaissance was that hunger for knowledge--that hunger for discovery. Old texts and manuscripts had been unburied from ancient times. These old texts allowed non-religious readers and scholars to spread the ancient knowledge confined within the books. Another type of text that was found was labeled as classical texts. Not only were ancient and classical texts discovered, but a new way to produce texts in mass numbers was discovered, as well. Individuals make these signs in order to raise their voice and the voices of others without actually speaking. This is like their artwork; their way of confronting and addressing the issue with some words or a picture on a poster. Despite the fact that these posters may not be displayed in museums or seen by art critics, to others it could be deemed as art just in a different sense. And maybe in the future some amateur or well-known artist will look back on these protests and make a painting/drawing of these events in order to document them for further
