The introduction to this chapter has opened my eyes to a world I have not entered in my knowledge base of thinking. After reading this chapter, the author has put in perspective that there is no escaping social work practice in law. Through out this reading, I was intrigued from start to finish, especially when the author began using examples of the pros and cons of integrating social workers with attorneys. I did not realized, that in many fields of social work, that we would reply so heavily on attorneys to be the voice of law for our clients. This dual relationship between the two as stated from the reading would continue to increase because more professions are realizing how vital it is to see a client situation through multiple lenses,
Rutgers University School of Social Work is an intense and competitive program that is well-known for shaping some of the finest and highest skilled social workers today. As an aspiring social worker, I want to attend a MSW program that will challenge and prepare me for a successful career and I know that Rutgers University School of Social Work is the institution that will do just that. As an undergraduate law and justice major, I have always dreamed of pursuing a career in the field of law as a defense attorney. However, when asked why, I was never able to provide an answer.
Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with areas of study in Psychology and Criminal Justice. A Bachelor’s degree in these areas of study, can open the doors to many different career paths ranging from human services to research to counseling. Personally, I would like to seek a career that will allow me to have an impact on other people’s lives. For this reason, I choose to explore the career of a Foster Care Placement Specialist. To better understand the, job responsibilities, employment requirements and pros and cons of this career I decided to seek counsel from my friend, Rachel Zimmerman, a Family Services Specialist with the Virginia Department of Social Services.
I want to be a physician because I want people to grow old. At the age of 6, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with leukemia. By age 8, the disease claimed his life, robbing him of the opportunity to experience the privilege of growing old. Unfortunately, we live in a society of vanity. We see the process of aging and choose not to embrace it.
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old to change my area of employment and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I realize the fact I was brought up by two dysfunctional, abusive parents in a chaotic home lead me to search out that same type of familiar relationship when I left home at the age of seventeen. In short, I married a domestic violence abuser and alcoholic when I was 19 years-old and had 5 children. Ten years into the marriage, when I had finally reached the end of my rope, a local police officer helped me to obtain a Protection from Abuse order and removed my husband from the home. For as long as I can remember, my mother has had a human service profession and provided me with daily examples of how to help others. One of my earliest memories is riding out a hurricane while we stayed in the adult group home where my mother worked, assisting with safety measures for residents and providing comfort to her community. My mother worked in multiple residential programs throughout my life, specializing her work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
Having been a true academic, I aim to fulfil my desire to ensure my soul purpose to do good with my abilities. Marriage and bringing up children has steered me away from any progression in a career within a school which I am now seeking again. I first started working with children in a school in India with children aged 4-5 years providing tuition needs on a one-to-one basis within a classroom environment. Since working in an Indian school, I have practised childcare and enjoyed maintaining this passion as a private venture at my home and as a volunteer at my temple's Sunday school. For as long as I can remember, there has always been a pursuit to discover what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I had a deep conviction to help my community from a very young age, as I had witnessed my mother care for the innocent children who had crossed the border and become separated from there families. She is a resident counselor in a government agency, known as His House, inspiring me to want to become an instrument to this society, of both justice and compassion. By the time I entered college, I had a profound interest in philosophy, along with sociology, that eventually I found myself indulged in studying Social Work for the remainder of my undergrad. I realized at a very young age that socioeconomic barriers affected not only my family but also my community. Along with this, the legal status of my family made it feel nearly impossible to be able strive forward, which was my mom’s reason to bring my brother and I to the U.S. At a point in my life, I was faced with two persisting questions: do I let the hurdles in my life overcome my aspirations? Or do I use these hurdles to drive my aspirations? I chose the latter and chose social work as my major.
Why did you choose that agency and the relevance for your future clients? Being an active duty military spouse, the military lifestyle has become a large part of my identity and I belong within the military community. Working for the Airman and Family Readiness Center as a Social Worker is very much a “calling” for me. When I was a new spouse without a support system, the stresses related to the military were much more than I ever imagined. Now that I am a seasoned spouse who will soon earn her MSW, I really want to be there for the new military members at the best of my abilities.
Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector. However, following three years of working close by these experts, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of the significance of the work. Effective social workers advocate to assure that the voices of those that are in need is heard and reiterate to various populations their importance in society. My interest in social work has developed from my desire to help make a difference in correcting the challenges in society. I think its importance for everyone to determine and nurture their purpose and explore ways that their strengths can help them overcome their problems.
Social work is a dynamic helping profession, where the main goal is to improve the welfare of every individual in a society. Law is a system of legal rules that governs the way members of society interact with each other. Law is necessary for order, justice, punishment, protection and to settle dispute. Social workers need to have familiarity with the legal process and the understanding of basic legal principles in order to effectively be able to assess and intervene on behalf of clients. Problems where social work and the law overlap have consistently challenged social work professionals.
