I am Densia Wray, a sophomore at City College majoring in Political Science and possibly Public Relations or minoring in Journalism. My decision to pursue these majors came after thoroughly enjoying my Intro to Media Communications and Intro to Political Science classes, as well as my desire to create local and societal change. Although it took a while for me to make this decision, once I started listening to what I really wanted and not what I thought was wanted from me I realized what I really want to do with my life. Ever since my first real introduction to the world and its realities in my high school English classes I knew that my purpose was not to conform to what society wants from me but to challenge society to change. Every dime I earn working at Reynolds Community College and every grant and scholarship I receive will go towards my passion of studying human behavior and applying everything I learn to bringing every community I can reach, a giant leap forward. After receiving my associates degree in Social a Science I decided to take a year off to work towards finding what it is that I really want to pursue. I have searched for that 'something ' that will keep me intrigued and awake all hours of the night without realizing it. I have eliminated the idea of simply working to make ends meet or finding a good job to support my family and "living" outside the 40+ hours of a weekday job. I am pursuing much more and I am confident that I have found a path leading me to wake up before my alarm clock sounds instead of praying for more time.
I am Shayla Padgett, and I work for South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD). I have over nine years of experience in human services; seven of those years are in rehabilitation. For the past two years I have worked as an Assessment and Career Exploration Specialist and a Job Preparedness Instructor for SCVRD. Using a variety of assessment tools, I assist our clients establish a vocational objective that coincides with their individual interests and abilities. In addition to assessments, I instruct classes that cover a variety of soft skills that prepare clients for careers.

For as long as I can remember, my mother has had a human service profession and provided me with daily examples of how to help others. Being an active duty military spouse, the military lifestyle has become a large part of my identity and I belong within the military community. Working for the Airman and Family Readiness Center as a Social Worker is very much a “calling” for me. When I was a new spouse without a support system, the stresses related to the military were much more than I ever imagined. Now that I am a seasoned spouse who will soon earn her MSW, I really want to be there for the new military members at the best of my abilities.
Health care, entrepreneurship, and ambassadorship are the core tenets of my desired career. These aspects look to tackle the problems that lie within health care and health care research for minorities. There is a lack of knowledge on some of the diseases and illnesses that plague minorities. This can be attributed to a variety of things. For one, there are not enough research samples from desired minority populations due to stigma and there is little to no interest in exploring the why’s and how’s of why some minorities are susceptible to some diseases.

Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector. However, following three years of working close by these experts, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of the significance of the work. I am especially interested in working in child welfare along with terminally ill children.
