I am Densia Wray, a sophomore at City College majoring in Political Science and possibly Public Relations or minoring in Journalism. My decision to pursue these majors came after thoroughly enjoying my Intro to Media Communications and Intro to Political Science classes, as well as my desire to create local and societal change. Although it took a while for me to make this decision, once I started listening to what I really wanted and not what I thought was wanted from me I realized what I really want to do with my life. Every dime I earn working at Reynolds Community College and every grant and scholarship I receive will go towards my passion of studying human behavior and applying everything I learn to bringing every community I can reach, a giant leap forward. After receiving my associates degree in Social a Science I decided to take a year off to work towards finding what it is that I really want to pursue. I have searched for that 'something ' that will keep me intrigued and awake all hours of the night without realizing it. I have eliminated the idea of simply working to make ends meet or finding a good job to support my family and "living" outside the 40+ hours of a weekday job. I am pursuing much more and I am confident that I have found a path leading me to wake up before my alarm clock sounds instead of praying for more time.
I am Shayla Padgett, and I work for South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD). I have over nine years of experience in human services; seven of those years are in rehabilitation. For the past two years I have worked as an Assessment and Career Exploration Specialist and a Job Preparedness Instructor for SCVRD. Using a variety of assessment tools, I assist our clients establish a vocational objective that coincides with their individual interests and abilities. In addition to assessments, I instruct classes that cover a variety of soft skills that prepare clients for careers.
I want to be a physician because I want people to grow old. At the age of 6, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with leukemia. By age 8, the disease claimed his life, robbing him of the opportunity to experience the privilege of growing old. Unfortunately, we live in a society of vanity. We see the process of aging and choose not to embrace it.
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old to change my area of employment and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I realize the fact I was brought up by two dysfunctional, abusive parents in a chaotic home lead me to search out that same type of familiar relationship when I left home at the age of seventeen. In short, I married a domestic violence abuser and alcoholic when I was 19 years-old and had 5 children. Ten years into the marriage, when I had finally reached the end of my rope, a local police officer helped me to obtain a Protection from Abuse order and removed my husband from the home. On Monday December 7, 2015 I was given the opportunity to interview a lovely lady who enjoys her job tremendously. Upon asking her the questions or prompts I found that this job like that of being a teacher can be a very rewarding and uplifting career. As a single mother who has confronted poverty, I am committed to reforming community intervention and advocacy practices. I have a particular interest in improving the accessibility and funding of offering all services under one umbrella within orphanages’. Prior to entering the Masters of Counselling program I envisioned my future role as a counselor to include advocacy, connection and collaboration with other practitioners in my community, community awareness, building client counsellor relationships with diverse clients, court appearances/testimony (for child custody cases) and a private practice while working part time for a community agency. Now that I am in my second semester of my masters degree, I continue to envision these future roles for myself, however now I am also considering at a later point in my career, adding consultation and clinical supervision to my future roles. Why did you choose that agency and the relevance for your future clients? Being an active duty military spouse, the military lifestyle has become a large part of my identity and I belong within the military community. Working for the Airman and Family Readiness Center as a Social Worker is very much a “calling” for me. When I was a new spouse without a support system, the stresses related to the military were much more than I ever imagined. Now that I am a seasoned spouse who will soon earn her MSW, I really want to be there for the new military members at the best of my abilities.
Health care, entrepreneurship, and ambassadorship are the core tenets of my desired career. These aspects look to tackle the problems that lie within health care and health care research for minorities. There is a lack of knowledge on some of the diseases and illnesses that plague minorities. This can be attributed to a variety of things. For one, there are not enough research samples from desired minority populations due to stigma and there is little to no interest in exploring the why’s and how’s of why some minorities are susceptible to some diseases.
At a young age I experienced homelessness. My mother could not afford the rent for our apartment which resulted in us being evicted. It was unpleasant not knowing when things were going to be better and where I was going to lay my head at night. Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector. However, following three years of working close by these experts, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of the significance of the work. I am especially interested in working in child welfare along with terminally ill children. I have got to a stage in my career where I have started to search out instruction that will make me more efficient in creating plans and providing services for vulnerable people.
My passion for helping and supporting those whose economic and financial standings have hindered their growth in our society, has driven me towards social work. I feel I have exhausted every possible avenue in my current degree field. Pursuing a master’s in Social Work, will give me the diversity that I need, while aiding me in bringing my dreams of working more in depth with clients, by helping assist them with their individual needs and issues to reality. I spent a year working towards this degree and eventually decided that I should be honest with myself. If I wanted to live up to the example my parents set and love what I do, I had to be honest with myself and pursue what it is I felt I was meant to do. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family and am still thankful to this day that I followed my heart and my gut instinct. My undergraduate studies at Kent State helped me significantly in my decision pursuing a career in school counseling.
