Anthem Essay The novel Anthem written by Ayn Rand demonstrates how society can force people to obey. How no one will dare to be different, and the feeling of guilt and shame washes over when you are. The fact that massive groups of human beings can be mislead and conform to few leaders can be a terrifying mentality. Conformity is an important part of a successful culture or nation, but it can lead to disaster. When used to an extent the meaning fades turning into unbalanced powers and too much control. “The will of our brother be done” (Rand 23). These words were forced out of the mouth of each individual the day the Council of Vocation chose each fifteen year old's career path. The thought of pursuing your own personal dreams or goals was believed to be a sin and selfish. Leaders in the story taught everyone that they lived for their brothers. Each was told they were born to serve each other with great respect and integrity. This may sound like a perfect world but many problems evolved because of this tradition. That is the reason no one hardly went against the leaders. They were seen as intimidating. Since Equality thought uniquely he soon realized that he could free himself of prison with little troubles. In the story Equality stated “It was easy to escape from the Palace of Corrective Detention. The locks are old on the door and there are no guards about. There is no guards, for men have never defied the Council's…” (66). Conforming to rules and regulations is not a horrible act. However in Anthem nearly everyone was programmed the same, no person had a strong individual mind or thought process.
