Often times, happiness can’t be truly enjoyed or even understood without struggle in the picture. This applies to Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel, Brave New World, where the World State located in London during the time period AF 632 provides “Community, Identity, and Stability” (Huxley 1). The motto by which the society hypocritically lives by. This society relies on a drug called soma to alleviate them from their problems and worships Henry Ford hence AF 632 which stands for After Ford. First of all, the islands are filled with many intellectual people that are all unique in their own way. This is important because in London, everything is predetermined and you aren’t allowed to discover what you are capable of. Many of the characters struggle with the thought that everyone is the same and that no one will really ever be the individual that’s not dependent on society and is not afraid to go against society’s norms. On the island, you’re allowed to do just that and everyone does what satisfies themselves not the community. This is what Mustapha Mond, the world controller, is trying to explain to Bernard and Helmholtz when they are “punished” and being sent to and island outpost. He tells them, “ ‘…if he had the smallest sense, he’d understand that his punishment is really a reward. He’s being sent to an island. That’s to say, he’s being sent to a place where he’ll meet the most interesting set of men and women to be found anywhere in the world’” (Huxley 193). This is very important due to the fact that diversity brings stability which leads to a stable community that is strong in every aspect. This is similar to London in the sense that organization brings stability yet this civilization has castes and is government made which is corrupt whereas the island’s is correct. To add on, the diverse stable community acknowledges individualism and that connects to another reason why the island is a better option. It is the better option because the island allows you to to be free and build your own happiness, whatever that might be. This is the answer Bernard and Helmholtz long for when Huxley writes, “ Really at the bottom he was interested in something else but what? In what? That was the problem” (Huxley
