I would highly suggest reading this book since it will make you realize that society isn’t always good. It will make you truly think of how Society was in that time period. It really influences you and let’s you know higher and better vocabulary. This book is confusing to read but overall it’s a good book. If you really like high-level reading then you should go for this book definitely.
This style immersed the reader into the story, allowing them to walk the filthy Pennsylvania streets right along with Matlock, and smell the freedom on the wind as if they were standing beside General Travis. I also thoroughly enjoyed the historical accuracy and key themes that the author skillfully wove into the plot. To illustrate, Jeannette tied in the concepts of the British East India Company and the West Indies slave trade. She also touched on the idea of indentured serevants coming accords the ocean, fleeing persecution in England, working the lowest jobs in America. An important theme with which the author correlated into the story was the idea of social darwinsim.
The author is trying to reveal the fact that they are going to go to war and the people of this society are clueless. This novel really shows the characters ignorance and how important it is to have a well informed

Throughout history, people have been inventing things to make their lives easier. That drive has produced huge changes in the American life several times over. In the 1700’s, life in America was very difficult. Transportation infrastructure was lacking, which pushed the delivery of goods to be almost exclusively down rivers. Military technology was roughly unchanged since America began, leaving the country open to attack from other nations.
Literature is full of messages, both hidden and in the open. These messages reveal a lot about what was happening during the period or even what could still be occurring now. For instance Eva’s Man by Gayl Jones and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston contain hidden messages about their time period that reveal gender inequality, sexuality, the idea of “romantic love”, as well as abjection of women. These messages reveal the truth about the ideal romantic love, how women were viewed, how they were treated based on these views and as well and how women were deprived of their sexuality.
I believe that the world at the moment is not going into a good direction. If we continue wasting water, pollute our environment, continue drug abuse, and the deviant acts increase, we are heading towards the pessimistic view of Octavia Butler. If we can start making our world a better place from now and starting caring and thinking about how our future will be, we will not go towards the direction that Octavia Butler believes will head to. Therefore, in order for us to decrease all the deviant acts that occur during the time periods that was discussed in the novel, we must start to try to decrease all the negative acts that occur in our society. People still relate to the book and feel the connections because society in the 1930’s had similar battles that everyone goes through each day in the twenty-first century. Some examples from the book are still around, including body image, and how the ideal woman should be like and their appearance. The only difference is that now, body image and the ideal woman is more serious because of the rise of social media. In the book, it shows the pressure a jury faces in convicting a black man of rape, even though there is clear evidence he is innocent. Much like peer pressure in the 1930’s, teenagers currently confront peer pressure to drink, smoke, and have sex at young ages.
The United States experienced political, geographic, economic, and, social changes during first half of the 1800s. Many people received new opportunities that helped open doors for them to begin their new, successful lives. Women received equality under the law for both men, and women causing political change. Also settlers were inspired to move to western land to expand their lands and settle in these new territories causing geographic change. And also the slaves were given some equality including the abolition of slavery causing social change.

It is a great love story only enhanced by the outlandish characters and constant mockery. The pacing of the novel is slow at first until half way through the first volume. The plot then accelerates and by the third volume it is hard to put down. Characters such as Mr. Collins, Mrs. Bennet, and Lady De Bourgh were all hysterical caricatures meant that livened up the novel during times when the plot was thin. The novel would not have been as cohesive or interesting without characters to add comic relief.
