An example of this is the conflict between the African Americans and the Ku Klux Klan. There are clear examples of functionalism in this movie. Europe is a relatively small continent that encompasses a large collection of countries. The large diversity of these countries means that, by definition, there is also a wide, and perhaps varying view of its future direction. Through limiting these ideals in to smaller common subcategories a general view of European ambitions emerges. This therefore leads to the demand for inspiring European stories that represent these people’s shared aspirations. The examination of two films provided a European story about ideals, that reflected the people of Europe’s aspirations.

Hello Anusuya, As always, I think you did a great job writing your paper! I wanted to elaborate on one aspect you mentioned in your paper that the protesters were also marching for their right of a trial. In an English course I took Summer we had to write a paper on the movie Hunger, which portrayed the struggle of the IRA fighters in the prison who were incarcerated without trial. In the movie the IRA fighters demanded to wear their own clothes as opposed to the clothes provided to them by the prison guards because they did not want to categorized as criminals, they protested through no wash-no slop to escape the regular beatings by the police officers in places like showers and bathrooms, and ultimately after all protests failed they went on a hunger strike sacrificing themselves one at a time to have their voices heard – meriting the status of martyrs. Functionalists tend to paint a rosy picture where society is held together by social consensus. They believe that all the social institutions are interconnected and interdependent. As an example, the family produces individuals and will rely on the school to transform them into money earners so that they can support the family financially and pay taxes to the state which will provide jobs and fund the schools. A more simple metaphor for the functionalist approach is the human body: each element has its own function but they are all inter-connected and inter-dependent. Emile Durkheim (1857-1917) agreed with this organic analogy alluded by Herbert Spencer.
