After this point in the book Paulsen writes of an older Charley that thinks of committing suicide. He says that he should move on and create a life aside from war. Charley thinks of marrying and having children but feels as if he is not fit to do so. He says his only way to escape the gruesome memories of war is to die.

Everyone from the Union and the Confederacy thought that the war would be over soon but sadly they were wrong. The war that Charley had just joined would be bloodiest American war yet. Briefly SUMMARIZE the book. The book, Soldier 's Heart is about a boy named Charley Goddard, he is 15, and he signs up for the military and he has to lie about his age, and the reason he signs up is that it is a “one in a lifetime deal” type of thing.
Richie and his friends all enter the war as young and naive teenagers, but quickly lose their innocence as the true horrors of war become apparent. One fact that I learned from the book is that a war is one of the most inhumane and devastating event that could ever take place. Previously, my knowledge on wars was limited to descriptions such as bad and really bad. However now, I understand how gruesome and grim war really is from the eyes of Richie. His vivid and terrifying descriptions helped me see that war shouldn’t be viewed with nonchalance, because some of the most unimaginable things have happened there.
Soldier’s Heart is a book about Charley Goddard, and how he develops Soldier’s Heart. Soldier’s Heart is what people who are afflicted with PTSD are said to have during the Civil War. Throughout the story, Charley gradually changes due to the battles during the war, until, in the end he has Soldier’s Heart. In the beginning Charley hears all about how the “The only shooting war to come in a man’s life, and if a man didn’t step right along he’d miss the whole thing.”
“Soldier’s Heart,” by Gary Paulsen is a book about a boy named Charley, who joined the Civil War at age 15. As Gary Paulsen was writing this novel in 1998, the novel becomes impacted because Gary Paulsen only had second hand information about the Civil War, which could cause inaccuracies in the story. He tries to be as accurate as he can by using real life accounts to make this story believable. This book shows how the ideas that people believe are appalling may be needed in survival situations. In the story Charley was ordered to kill Confederate horses to give the sick soldiers meat around the Washington camp that were dying of dehydration and starvation.
To many people take the toll of war,to many lives have been taken from the toll of war. Families have been ripped apart by the toll of war and the stress that it puts on a family and others that live near it or in it. It has ripped apart famly bonds too. War is a heart smasher in this book My Brother Sam Is Dead.
To sign up to fight Charley lied about his age, he told them he was eighteen. I think he was to young to enter the war so that made it harder for him. Charley wasn’t worried about fighting because he had been hunting his whole life, so he knew about the musket he was given. When Charley went out to fight for the first he was a little worried.
Bertrand Russell once said, “War doesn’t determine who’s right, only who’s left.” The Vietnam War was one in particular where soldiers often struggled with who the enemy was. War is too often thought of as something to be won, but this novel reveals it is simply something to be survived, and the shell of a person that is left will not be the same one that walked into battle. That is a jarring reality very prominent in Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers. It is a lesson soldier Richard Perry learns all too well on his journey from innocent young boy to Vietnam veteran.
War and its affinities have various emotional effects on different individuals, whether facing adversity within the war or when experiencing the psychological aftermath. Some people cave under the pressure when put in a situation where there is minimal hope or optimism. Two characters that experience
The war took a young boy full of joy, gave him a gun, and stole his life of joy from right under him. From his perspective, the inhumanity of it all, the torture of the world war, could be seen.
Throughout the ages, wars have wreaked havoc and caused great destruction that lead to the loss of millions of lives. However, wars also have an immensely destructive effect on the individual soldier. In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque, one is able to see exactly to what extent soldiers suffered during World War 1 as well as the effect that war had on them. In this essay I will explain the effect that war has on young soldiers by referring to the loss of innocence of young soldiers, the disillusionment of the soldiers and the debasement of soldiers to animalistic men. Many soldiers entered World War 1 as innocent young boys, but as they experienced the full effect of the war they consequently lost their innocence.
War is best described from the words of Harry Patch who was the last surviving soldier of WWI “War Is Organized Murder, And Nothing Else”. These words coming from a person who experienced what it means to be fighting in a war, not knowing if he will live another second speaks volumes. This idea of just how gruesome and costly war truly is, exemplified with pieces of writing like Chickamauga by Ambrose Bierce, “To His Love” by Ivor Gurney, and The Things They Carried by Tim O’brien. The Civil war the deadliest war in American History.
