Soledad Brother Essay The book Soledad Brother written by George Jackson Jr first seemed to be a story of someone who was innocently kept in jail and would try to persuade himself out of jail by writing letters. In the first page I found out that he was sent to jail for stealing $70 from a gas station in Los Angeles. Even though there was evidence of his innocence he was accused because he had a record and he got kept in jail. He also was accused of killing a white prison guard after he killed 3 black inmates. When he was in school his mom put him into an all white school where the kids couldn’t learn their own culture the way it is only they way that it supposed to be taught around. He also feels like his mom betrayed him and his race. In the letter of January 1996 Jackson writes to his father, " I feel like a burden to you, it is best that we suspend exchanges until I have struggled back to my feet." That shows that he doesn’t wanna be helped by his father and looks like he wants his dad away from him until he can get back in his feet again by himself. This related to me because I am stubborn when I know I need help but I don’t want to ask anyone or take it from anyone. Especially if my father is involved I will try my best to not ask him for any help and grow above all my problems. This means that we are independent and that we want to be we don’t want any help and that we think we can defend ourselves. “Mama sent me a card with a picture of some white people on the front of it.
