In “The Box Man” by Barbara Ascher, Ascher presents three cases of solitude to the reader. Among these cases, the Box Man is one who wanders without a home, but is content with his life, unlike those described in the other two cases. Society assumes the homeless cannot live with dignity, due to their financial state and their place in society. By portraying the Box Man as dignified and comfortable, Ascher contends that society’s assumptions about the homeless are false and the homeless can lead a dignified life by becoming their own
