Solubility Qualitative Reaction Lab Report

All goals were met including to identify an unknown compound by discovering the chemical and physical properties of the compounds, as well as the cations and anions, in order to compare the cost effectiveness, safety, and potential yield between the synthesis reactions for that substance. The solubility qualitative results for the unknown compound were that the solute particles completely dissolved in the solvent (water). This results means that the unknown compound is a polar molecule because the solvent of water is also a polar molecule and the basic principle of “like dissolves like” applies in this situation. So since the compound completely dissolved in water, the compound must be polar. The solubility quantitative results for the unknown …show more content…

Obviously the percent yield for the precipitate of BaSO4 for the gravimetric analysis was less than one hundred percent for multiple reasons. The percent yield for the unknown sample and authentic sample were 77.8% and 77.5% respectively. During the vacuum filtration of the solution, some of the precipitate was not completely filtered out and remained in the bottom of the flask, that remaining solution could have been centrifuged to give a more accurate value of the actual amount of BaSO4 that was produced, or that solution remaining in the bottom of the flask could have been vacuum filtrated once more to ensure that all of the precipitate particles were harvested. Another error that could have occurred would be that there was not an excess amount of K2SO4 added to the BaCl2 solution to where not all of the barium would have precipitated. So more K2SO4 solution (or unknown sample solution) could have been added to the reaction, instead of the 20.0 mL that the procedure initially recommended. That was probably the most significant source of error in the experiment. Also, another source of error is that not all of the test tubes, beakers, flasks, and funnels could have not been thoroughly cleaned out, so there could have been some contamination issues with any of the results of any of the
