Planning Commentary: Secondary Mathematics
1a. Central focus of the segment
The Central Focus is: Students will analyze and solve linear equations and linear system of equations (with two unknow variables). Students will also solve linear equations with one unknow variable. The central focus leads students to make connections between algebra, geometry, reading, and application of mathematics in real world context. In lesson1, students will learn how to solve linear equation in one unknown variable. I will give examples of linear equations with one unknown variable with one solution. students will also learn linear equations with infinitely many solutions or no solution. In lesson 2, students will solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms. Explain how lessons build and link to other skills
Linear equations with one or two variables require students to link knowledge solving regular equations. The knowledge includes simplify forms, collecting like terms, find rational number for coefficients etc. Students also need to connect the knowledge of geometry, students need to draw the straight lines and write down equations.
To solve systems of linear equations with two variables, students need to link the knowledge to reading since they need to understand the narrative of the questions. The importance reading capacity is critical for solve word problems, which often links to problems from the real world, such as when people are paid by hourly wage, calculate the total amount of salary over a certain period of time. In other areas, such as finance, physics, and biology student may face some situations that they need to use linear equations to solve problems.
