In 325, the Council of Nicea tried to formally explain the link of the Son to the Father, in response to the contentious lessons of Arius. Led by Bishop Athanasius, the council declared the doctrine of the Trinity as orthodoxy and judged Arius' teaching that Christ was the first creation of God. Arius taught, in accordance with an earlier subordinationist theological tradition, that the Son of God was a creature, made by God from nothing a finite time ago. Mark A.
