In part one of the book it discusses the elements of music including the musical form in where songs utilize binary, call and response form, or ternary. One song that my brother and I grew up listening to, though it is a really old song, and uses call-and-response is “Shout” by The Isley Brothers. I believe that the song “Shout” uses call-and-response form because there is a constant question-and-answer pattern. This coming summer I will have the incredible and exciting opportunity to go and see Chicago in concert. Throughout my high school career, I was in a chamber choir. My director, born in the 50’s has an affinity for everything Chicago. This affinity led my choir to sing countless Chicago songs, like “25 or 6 to 4”, “Saturday in the Park”, and “Will You Still Love Me?”. Each of these songs now brings me back to a memorable point in my life, which is relived every time I listen to those compositions.
The song “Louie Louie” covered by the Kingsmen, a garage band from Portland, Oregon, is considered the first major hit song from such a band. Many garage bands from the 1960’s were simply one-hit wonders that were only well known by locals. The Kingsmen managed to break this mold; most of their fame was contributed to their version of the 1950’s song “Louie Louie” written by Richard Berry. Personally, while I am able to admit the song is fun to dance to, I do not see what made this song so appealing to listeners. The vocals are completely garbled to the point of being impossible to understand, which led to an FCC investigation, but it was determined that there was no profanity or explicit sexual references in the lyrics.
Music carries each and every one of us to a new awareness. It can reach to the innermost part of an individual. Music can envelope our emotions from tears all the way to our joy. It captivates and motivates. As I attended a concert on Saturday, November 7, 2015, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed with power and feeling to their audience.
I feel the song that relates the most today my eighth grade experience is Stressed Out by Twenty One Pilots. The song Stressed Out is about how the artists wish that they ‘could turn back time, to the good old days’, talking about how simple life was when they were younger and taking everything for granted. They talk about how everything was easier and wished that when they were kids, they didn’t think about the future so much, and just lived in the moment, and enjoyed while it lasted. One line from the song Stressed Out is ‘Wake up you need the money’. This line talks about how very soon we need will need to make money and pay for things by ourselves, instead of hiding behind our parents letting them pay for everything.

The story titled the Long Black Song has a controversial balance of power that is shown throughout the narrative. As time progresses, the struggle between men and women is heightened and there seems to be a passive partner paired with a mastery one. Sarah, a married housewife, was portrayed as being powerless within her own race, but when compared to the white man, Sarah gained physical and mental strength because she was curious about how being with the opposite race would feel, as well as the fact that black men were exceedingly domineering. Sarah was portrayed as a very frail character when equated to her husband, Silas, because the black men are the most dominant partner within an ethnically similar relationship.
Heartbreak Hotel is a song that was recorded by Elvis Presley and was written by a high school teacher named Mae Axton and a steel guitar player named Tommy Durden. It was recorded and released in January 1956 by RCA Studios. Elvis was only 21 and Heartbreak Hotel was his first song with the new record label RCA in Nashville, Tennessee. He recorded the song with his band the Blue moon boys. It was his first million-seller and the bestselling single of 1956.
It’s Not In His Kiss There is a song called The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss) which was written by Rudy Clark and the version I like best is the one sung by Cher. However if we’re talking relationships it’s not in his kiss because even the best liar can kiss passionately.
In the piece “Self Reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of Americas most influential thinkers, Emerson talks about the subject of individuality. Using many different rhetorical strategies, he makes his perspective on the subject loud and clear by using personification, alliteration and analogy. “The eye was placed where one ray shall fall, that it might testify ray shall fall, that it might testify of that particular ray. Bravely let him speak the utmost syllable of his confession” (Emerson). Emerson uses personification, giving “the eye” the ability to talk and confess such as a human would.
Hip-hop is an influential form of music that displays an artist’s honest and revealing story that many of the general public can relate to. One of the many songs that I can relate to is “Love Yourz” written by J Cole. The song talks about how Cole reflects on the most important things in life such as love and happiness. He realizes that the money and fame didn’t bring him the happiness he desired. To gain true happiness, he needed to appreciate himself and those that love him.
One of the most talented and the most popular singers of the modern time is considered to be Adele. For me, she is not only a popular singer but an icon and the great performer of moving and even heartbreaking songs. After I have accidentally heard her song on the radio for the first time, there was no one better for me in terms of singing. In her songs, I felt everything, including pain and joy, drive and hope. However, the most important characteristic of her songs is the soul that is felt in every particular case.
There have been many protest songs in the United States; the freedom of speech has contributed to powerful music and protest words that are written in song. The song that will be discussed throughout this essay is “American Idiot” by Green day. This song speaks volume about the uneducated “America” and puts emphasis on the destruction that reality television is making on the United States of America. Listening to the unspoken word and read between the lies, for that then you will understand. The song “American Idiot” was released during the 2004 presidential election, where George W. Bush was selected into office for the second term as President of the United States of America (source).
The song that I chose was “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. It was released in 2004, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. It also hit number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Natasha Bedingfield has another popular song “Pocketful of Sunshine” and was really only popular in 2004-2006. You can find her songs on multiple 00’s playlists.
Introduction: Music always plays an important role in our daily lives. Especially if it speaks to a particular category of people or there is a message behind it, like firework by Katy Perry. I believe this song is a favorite song for many people. But the question here how many of those people stops for a moment and think why they like this song? Do they like the music or lyric?
