Have you ever hesitated to do something because you were afraid of the consequences?
Manny people hesitate to let a significant other know their true feelings because they are afraid to get hurt. The song “Can’t Fight This Feeling “ by REO Speedwagon and the poem “My New Year’s Eve Prayer” have a similar theme that love is uncontrollable, however they show different forms of resistance against a loved one. In the song “Can’t fight this Feeling” the man in the song is resisting falling in love and he claims he does not know why he holding out. On the other hand, the poem “My New Year’s Eve Prayer” displays that the girl in the poem is resistant to showing her true self and live how she wants. Both of these poems show needless resistance in interesting ways.

For instance, in the second stanza of the song the writer uses metaphors with the phrase “You're a candle in the window /on a cold, dark winter's night”. This metaphor shows the similarity between the one he cares for and a light in the darkness. This comparison shows that she is his “direction” in life. This is an extended metaphor because it is cohesive with the figurative language in the first stanza. This relates back to the theme because stanza two the man in the song is wandering in his faithfulness to his true love, however he is always moving in her direction. Another example of a metaphor in this song is seen in the third stanza where the author uses metaphor with the phrase “It's time to bring this ship into the shore /and throw away the oars, forever” This metaphor compares love to an ocean and the person you love to an island where you live. This being said the man in the song is ready to throw caution to the wind to be with the women he loves forever.
