The Song of Songs in the bible has been known for many different interpretations. Historically, the most common method to interpret the Song of Songs has an allegory of the Father’s love for Israel. Many churches viewed the book as a picture of Christ’s love for both His bride and His church. This interpretation has been known to be the best interpretation because of the New Testament references Christ made about His relationship with the bride and the church . (Hindson & Towns, 2013). Advocates of the allegory theory have been adamant that there must be some type of “spiritual” message that exceeds the earthly theme of human sexuality (J. Paul Tanner, 2016). The Jewish interpreters understood the Songs as an allegory of love between God and Israel, while the Christians interpreters have deemed it to depict a love between Christ and the church (J. Paul Tanner, 2016). The Jewish allegorical interpretation manifested during the periods of Exodus until the coming of the Messiah. The Christians had a similar interpreting method viewing the bridegroom as Christ and the bride as the church. It was a dominant view until it started to wane in Christianity during the last century. Unlike the previous Christian interpretation with bridegroom (Christ) and bride (church), the Roman Catholic identified the bride to be Mother Mary (J. Paul Tanner, 2016). The most outlandish Christian view was the devised mystical marriage view within the Roman Catholics. The view teaches that the “mystical marriage” of the union of the soul with God when the loving awareness of God becomes most transcendent and permanent (J. Paul Tanner, 2016).
