1. Pick out four (4) of the problem passages in Chapter 14 and give a brief explanation of how each is solved. The first “problem” passages in regards to Creation are brought up in Genesis 1:11-12, and 2:5 where each discusses vegetation growth at different times: before Adam and after Adam. This “contradiction” can easily be solved if the individual understands the context within each passage. The plants appeared before Adam was created (Genesis 1:11-12) and were tilled after Adam was created (2:5). Next the Numbers 25:9 passage about the plague that killed 24,000 Israelites who worshiped Baal and Peor appears to be different than Paul’s number of deaths in 1 Corinthians 10:8: 23,000. The three approaches discussed are allegorical, literal, and semiallegorical (Ryrie, 1999, p. 125-126). An individual who uses the allegorical approach uses symbols instead of the actual words in the Bible to interpret its meaning; whereas one who takes the literal approach to interpreting the Bible does so by reading the exact words used. In the middle of the spectrum is the semiallegorical approach. An individual who uses this approach uses symbolism and literalism in order to interpret and understand the Bible’s message. There are rational reasons as to why an individual takes a literal, grammatical, or historical hermeneutic to interpret the Bible. For the literal hermeneutic, the rational reason is simply that God created us to have a relationship with Him. So in order to have a relationship, we need to be able to communicate. God created the language on purpose that He used in the Bible to speak to us so that we can understand. Within the language God used in the Bible He uses specific words on purpose for us to interpret its meaning; which is the grammatical hermeneutic. Finally rational reason the historical hermeneutic is a valid interpretive approach to studying the Bible because it allows the individual to understand the meaning based on what the original author meant, but ultimately what God
