Short Description of Sotomayor

Sonia M. Sotomayor is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court who was nominated by

President Barrack Obama to the Supreme Court in 2009. She is the 111th Justice to be appointed

to the Supreme Court. She is also the first justice of Hispanic descent in the entirety of the

Supreme Court.

Sonia M. Sotomayor was born on the 25th of June, 1954. She was born in the Bronx in New

York City, and her family’s ethnic background is of Puerto Rican heritage. Around the age of

Sonia displayed antigovernment sentiment in numerous cases as a district judge. She

facilitated a severe sentencing demeanor for criminal reviews and was not considered to be a

pro-defense judge. She would also sentence white collar crimes to the highest possible

sentencing, and tended to sentence crimes more harshly than other judges. Sotomayor was

influenced by Judge Miriam Cedarbaum, who relied heavily on factual information in order to

make key decisions in the judicial process. Sotomayor was always swift and efficient with cases,

being prepared before approaching every case she reviewed.

In Sotomayor’s 10 years in the 2nd Circuit, she reviewed thousands of appeals and established

many opinions in the majority. The Supreme Court reviewed many of her cases, where they

August, 2009. She was one of the youngest justices in the Supreme Court, and the first Hispanic

Justice in history.

Analysis

Sotomayor’s life can be seen as a revelation for many, as she marks success by her efforts

faced with many socio economic prejudices being a 2nd generation immigrant. It is imprudent

that one takes account for such injustice trialed in the system that finds oppressive forces in

many forms. Sonia grew up in an environment that, for the most part, suppressed her ability to

rise in success. A family placed in harsh environments, where privileges are something but
