“Sound and Fury” Reaction Paper Two Overall, I thought the movie “Sound of Fury” was okay. The movie itself was kind of boring, but it definitely helped me understand the cochlear implant and how it is affecting the deaf community. The movie helped my understanding of the issues in the Deaf community relating to cochlear implants. Many people in the deaf community have different opinions on the cochlear implant, both good and bad. These different opinions create tension within the community and sometimes those who do get a cochlear end up being singled out by the deaf community. For example, in the movie, some people believe that the cochlear implant will “take their deafness away”. While others believe it will make life better, and if you have a chance to hear it, then you should take it. …show more content…
In the movie, we go with a girl named Heather and her family to explore the idea of Heather getting a cochlear implant. Heather’s family shows a perfect example of these different opinions regarding cochlear implants. When Heather's father first hears about this, he is really upset. He believes that the cochlear implant would take away her deaf culture and did not like this idea because their family is completely deaf. Heather’s grandmother has quite a different reaction. She is completely for the cochlear implant and thinks that Heather’s parents are limiting her. Although they are against the cochlear implant, eventually Heather’s parents start opening up to the idea. So, they decided to visit some families with children who have received cochlear implants. The first family they visited was an all-hearing family. The only person who was deaf was the daughter, and she didn't even know that she was deaf. She had received the cochlear implant when she was very young and never even learned how to sign. This scared the family a lot, especially because they were already worried about their daughter losing her deaf
