The lead teachers will pass out a piece of drawing paper to each student.
The lead teachers will then walk students through how to fold their papers, in order to create four separate boxes as we model for them the correct way to fold their papers.
“Boys and girls, please fold your paper like a hot dog (long way).”
“Once you have folded your paper in half, we would like you to fold your paper once more like a hamburger (short way).”
“Ok, great! Now that your drawing paper is folded, please put your name on the top and label each box 1,2,3,4 like the example I have created.”
“In box 1, please draw a circle on the left side to represent Earth and another circle to represent the Sun on the right …show more content…

“Next, we will add the equator to our drawing. The equator is an imaginary circle around the middle of the Earth, separating the Earth equally into Northern and Southern hemispheres. From that description, please draw your equator as a line on your Earth …show more content…

In box number two of students’ drawing paper, they will redraw their model from box number one and add shading in their Earth model, drawing to represent “light and dark” by shading in part of the Earth.
After shading, students will be asked “What do you think the shading of dark and light could represent on Earth?”
In box number three of students’ drawing paper, they will recreate their drawing from box number two, except they will label their shaded portion as “night” and their unshaded portion of the Earth model as “day.”
Students will make the connection during this step that dark and light on the model represent day and night.
Students will also have a star sticker on their Earth model, in order for the sticker to represent them on Earth. As they begin to repeat the rotating motion, they will be asked to point with their finger the direction of counterclockwise. Students will apply this direction to their rotating motion.
When the lead teacher says, “Stop,” students will go around the group and share whether their star sticker is experiencing night or day based on its location in relation to the Sun in our demonstration.
Higher Level Question: If a part of the Earth goes from light to dark in one rotation, how many days is one
