In Chapter 9 of the book “Major Problems in California History” the authors use the key term “Hollywood” which is known as the “film colony” where movie stars lived and played. In colonial Texas, Hispanic women, including poor women, had rights. Working within the law, they were able to file suits. When filing suits, a woman’s marital status was not mentioned, it was not important according to Stuntz.

The southerners objected to California’s admission as a free state because it would destroy the delicate equilibrium in the senate, perhaps forever. France had already had claimed land in Louisiana so they planted their flag in the eastern part of Texas.
The Hispanics were in the newly-acquired territory before the 1840s. When the United States acquired New Mexico, many Hispanics were acquired also. These Hispanics were cattle farmers and sheep ranchers. Despite being on the land for many years, the Hispanics were not allowed citizenship even though they were 50,000 of them compared to 1,000 whites. These Hispanics feared of the new whites taking their land.
California was born in the middle of many issues of conflict. Crisis over slavery, political legitimacy, and conflict over land, labor, race and ethnicity ( Competing Vision 132 ).During the mid 1800’s California saw many transformations, some positive some negative. There was a slow reservations development for Indians, but a better established land ownership. With certain political figures, who rallied to remove laws, which discriminated against African Americans and rather high religious tolerance, California was taking a distinct shape.
