Did you know that Sparta and Athens are alike and different in many ways? Sparta and Athens had differences and similarities in government, culture, and education. The city-states Sparta and Athens varied in culture and many other things. They were also similar in many things. Although the Athenians and the Spartans differed in many cultural ways, they both valued a sense of duty to their community.
These are the similarities and differences between Sparta and Athens. The first difference was that the Athenians focused on the arts rather than military. The Spartans focused on military and boys started military training at seven. All boys in Athens could receive education in a school. Athenians wanted to be well-rounded. The second difference was that Sparta had an oligarchy rather than a democracy. The Athenians had a democracy as a government.The first democracy was created in Athens. Sparta had an oligarchy, which means it was ruled by a council of people. A democracy is a type of government ruled by the citizens. The third difference was that girls and women in Sparta had more rights than other Greek girls and women. In Sparta, women could own land and go where they please. The Athenians allowed wealthy girls to go to school, but most were expected to stay at home and learn how to manage the household.
