Athens and Sparta were both great city- states who were very much rivals, but one sure won all around greatness. Ancient Greece was very much based around Athens. Their government was much looked up to. It is an all around superior city- state, because they thrive in all categories including war, government, having many cultural achievements, and many more. They understood that they needed to be good at as much as they could.

Athens had a greater geographic advantage because they were surrounded by water on both sides. They also were able to develop a navy- like military. This was because they were good at building ships, and the easiest way to invade was by sea. The sea surrounding Athens was the Aegean Sea. This was great because the …show more content…

These mountains would protect the Athenians from invaders, because it would make it harder to enter their land. They also had a great daily life.

Athens is a beautiful polis. It is, or was kind of the heart of Ancient Greece. The Athenians developed a democracy. This was a direct democracy, which means the Athens would vote directly on issues. Most city-states were tyrannies at this time. Cleisthenes was the first Athenian to come up with this concept of government. The political side of Athens is a big selling point. It is nice to be able to really, directly vote on issues. This is all why if I were able to either go to Athens or Sparta, I would go to Athens. Their democracy would be a great excuse to go too!

I think Athens made greater cultural achievements because Sparta was too focused on war. Well Athens was trying to thrive by being an all around great city- state, Sparta got too focused on putting all their attention, and energy in war, and being strong. This could be good for Athens though, since this added a great place for the Athenians to fit in, and thrive in their position. Athens had a background of being super strong in all positions. Whether it was farming, or a very strong navy, they had you covered. Athens was celebrated in their excellence in architecture, mathematics, sculpture, and poetry.
