In Sleuthing The Alamo, James E. Crisp investigates Sam Houston’s speech made to the soldiers at Refugio. Upon reading the speech, Crisp was in disbelieve at the vulgar, anti-Mexican words used by Houston while addressing the men of Refugio. What Crisp read had contradicted everything he had known of Sam Houston, and led him to dig deeper into the sources to find the facts. Crisp is able to restore Sam Houston’s honor by recognizing the disconnection in his speech, heavily researching the sources, and disproving Houston’s speech. Along the way, Crisp makes two discoveries that help lead to solving his case.
Every hockey player knows of the 1980 miracle on ice where the young American team took down the international powerhouse of the Soviet Union. Going into the game against the Soviets in the semifinals of the 1980 Olympic games, Herb Brooks gave one of the most inspirational speeches known to date. This exact scenario was portrayed in the Disney film, Miracle, released in 2004 directed by Gavin O’Conner. The scene starts with the young American squad sits quietly around the dressing room knowing they are the underdog and may be playing the last game of their Olympic career. The entire speech relates back to the theme of seizing opportunity; he starts with saying “Great moments are born with great opportunity, and that’s what we have here tonight.”
Jean Chrétien: Passionate Plea For Unity Chrétien’s speech is mainly targeted towards Quebecers wishing to separate from our country. This speech took place prior to the referendum regarding the issue of whether or not Quebec should proclaim its individual sovereignty. Chrétien also recognizes Quebec as a “distinct society” whilst specifying Quebec’s unique language and culture which makes it an admirable community. To bring this all together, Chrétien stresses the beauty in Canadian diversity, generosity, tolerance and respect which is idolized by other foreigners. I appreciated how Chrétien identified and acknowledged Quebecers cries for change and even says that he knows the separatist party will guarantee exactly that.

Listening to McConaughey speak you automatically think southerner, he has a rich southern dialect that can’t be missed and is used for every character he plays. The Bernie Mac show is about a rich comedian who has adopted his sister three children to raise because his sister went to rehab for drug usage. In the show Bernie demonstrates real life situations that people go through when parenting or even dealing with someone else’s kids but sacrificing a change in his life to help out a family member. When the show begins Bernie is sitting on a chair smoking a cigar and the first thing he say is “I’m going to kill one of them kids.” Most parents can relate to because they have stated those words to their own kids before.
Coach Gary Gaines. In the movie “Friday Night Lights” has a speech or two throughout the movie. “Being Perfect” is the speech that is really appealing to my eye. “Being Perfect’s” purpose is to inform you that it doesn't take much to be perfect. This speech in not your normal locker room speech.
In President Roosevelt’s speech, there are multiple rhetorical devices that can get a point across. Using these rhetorical devices, the audience may be able to become swayed by the main message being expressed. The goal of a speech is to catch the audience’s attention greatly and persuade them to gain similar beliefs on whatever is being spoken of. In Roosevelt’s speech, the mood expresses a ray of hope yet a feel of strictness. One rhetorical device used by Roosevelt is personification.
Linguistics Being supposedly made up on the spot, Noah S. Sweat did not have time to compose an eloquent speech about a controversial topic. He instead spoke a purely unfactual and highly descriptive banter using doublespeak to voice his opinion of whiskey. Both sides of his argument include impactual adjectives to describe the drink. Or as Mr. Sweat would say on line 6, “the devil’s brew,” or on line 12, “the philosophic wine”. Each side of his argument is entirely one sentence long, implying that he emotionally fuels his speech as he works out his thoughts with the audience as one thought flows to the other.

President Ronald W. Reagan was known as a great communicator. In his “Address from the Brandenburg Gate (Berlin Wall)” speech, President Reagan called upon the leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, to open the gates and tear down the wall that divided Berlin. Reagan appealed to the West Berliners by connecting with them through emotions because they rebuilt their city and had prospered and were free. He uses facts to persuade the West Berliners they would benefit from tearing down the wall. He uses examples how other countries who have achieved freedom have been successful.
Speech of Miss Polly Baker Until somewhat recently women were considered inferior to men. Women could not work and were wholly dependent upon a man. One of the biggest leaps forward in equality was the Enlightenment era. The Enlightenment encouraged rational thought and equality for all. “The Speech of Miss Polly Baker” written by Benjamin Franklin is one of the most influential writings in American gender enlightenment especially in social, monetary and religious issues.
Theodore Roosevelt’s speech, Strength and Decency, included a variety of rhetorical strategies that allowed him to persuade educated, mature, and, strong men to become powerful and decent human beings. Roosevelt’s purpose of presenting this speech was to persuade the audience to behave like the strong men they are but with decency and manners because, in the 1900s, men behaved in a very manly fashion. However, men lacked manners and morality. Due to the very questionable propriety of men, Roosevelt was driven to address how men should act the way a real mature man would in order to further improve society. By using rhetorical strategies such as repetition, Christian appeal, and a serious tone, Roosevelt is able to show his audience how strength and decency go hand in hand.

The “greatest American humorist of his age”, Mark Twain once said, “Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself.” From Missouri to Nevada, apprentice to father of American literature, short stories to novels—Twain became the well-known author he is today because of the impact his life adventures and trial had on him (5). Author of the excerpt from A Presidential Candidate, Twain often used humor and wit to illustrate his stories and make his point known. Through his use of satire, irony, and rhetorical questions, Twain exposes the perceived truths of the Presidential campaigns and candidacies. In his excerpt, Twain uses satire to illustrate how anyone can run for President regardless of experience (14).
