In the twenty-first century, the United States is predominately a two-party political system. In George Washington’s Farwell Address (1796) he said, “The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism” (para. 22). In this speech, Washington cautioned his fellow Americans about the risks of political parties; he claimed the partisanship would lead to inter-political discord, divide the nation, and give rise to instances of tyranny. Although a two-party system has the potential to not be detrimental to the country, with people following the examples of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson Americans have a tendency to put their personal political associations ahead of what may be best for the country.
Salient issues rose the most in 2003-2004, 2005-2006, and 2011-2011 and that is not surprising given the introduction of new issues such as homeland security and global warming over the course of the last decade. Jefferson states, “the government is best which governs least”, but what affect does that have on society? The competition for power between separated institutions is a driving force. When the legislative and executive branches of our government engage in a power struggle, policies that could be potentially life changing or at the least beneficial, suffer at the hands of legislative gridlock. Polarization has a huge impact on the difficulties faced by congress.
When the Framers wrote the Constitution, they did not allude to the prohibition or permission of citizen-led groups that could influence the policy-making process. Later, the Bill of Rights was passed, which included the First Amendment, granting the freedom of assembly and right to petition. These two rights allowed for the rise of unrestricted factions, as predicted by James Madison, therefore the natural formation of interest groups. Although the Founding Fathers were all aristocrats who tried to limit the common majority’s power, the simple governmental structure they created had few constraints regarding the public’s power to advocate for their opinions.
Another major flaw inherent to the American political system is gerrymandering. The two-party system already reduces the potential ways voters to express their political interests and preferences, gerrymandering further reduces the value of votes. For the purposes of voting and elections, voting electorates are divided up into districts. How those district lines are drawn up can be dangerous for representation. Politicians can manipulate the system and redraw lines in a way where politicians can in essence, guarantee their position by packing their loyal voting base into their district and marginalize the minority party.
Party government believes that we need a “strong decisive government to solve social and economic problems”, but in order to do this we must be able to keep our government under control, as mentioned earlier (Hershey 301). All judges and justices share a commitment to uphold the Constitution making the United States a country governed by a rule of law. Roosevelt was no civil libertarian nor a crusader for racial justice but, his court-packing plan would not have endangered the Supreme Court 's legacy of ruling in favor of individual rights; the justices of his era showed little interest in protecting the rights that are actually protected by the Constitution (Milhiser Web). Studies over the last few decades have all come to the conclusion that court-packing is unconstitutional in nature, but what about interest groups? How can an interest groups influence courts as well?
Not long after the United States constitution was created, the country witnessed a growing debate over how to explain and apply the presentation of the new constitution. During the 1790s the United States federal government took charge in a series of threats to the country such as international tensions. Most importantly the formation of competing political parties which were the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans. Today the United States is predominately a two party system although more political parties exist, American voters usually side with one of the main two which are the Democrats or the Republicans. These two parties represent different visions for America.

Have you ever been so close to a goal but you lack of confidence wouldn’t let you fly? Growing up, I have never been the most confident person, which has caused me to fail certain things. The time when I experienced a failure was when I didn’t get accepted into Newark Tech Vocational School. My family moved to from Miami, Florida to Irvington, New Jersey during the summer of 2012 due to financial issues. The move was like a fresh start, which I certainly wasn’t elated about.
In other words, the Democrats are not willing to work with the Republicans to reach a decision and vice versa. According to The Hill, it states, “I believe that the state of the union can only be strong when our political leaders put the common good of the nation over the temporal political gains of one party or another.” This division that is happening in Congress has caused a huge roadblock to conducting the nation's business. Problems like government shutdowns, inability to pass laws to the President, and so many disagreements between the members of Congress are tearing it apart.
The majority of us now relate the American political system to the constant rivalry between political parties. While they vie for the support and votes of the American people, Republican and Democratic Party leaders engage in what seems like an endless debate. Early American Republic two centuries ago, and our founding fathers were essentially at peace with this reality. The majority of them, along with President Washington, were worried that the formation of political parties would split the young nation into warring sections, damage our sense of national identity, and weaken support for the new Constitution. The United States is well known for its bipartisan political system, where Republicans are always competing with Democrats, trying to popularize their political ideals and seeking ways to maintain their political leadership. Despite the traditional viewpoint that Republicans and Democrats are completely different, they are in a position to reach agreement on many political and social issues. Beyond the controversial issues of federalism, unilateral military aggression, abortion and same-sex marriages, democratic and republican parties encourage the privatization of prisons and the increase of the army budget, supplemented by a political effort to reduce the burden Taxation of the wealthiest. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are willing to increase the tax burden that the American population currently carries.
Thesis Statement – As the Democrats and the Republicans lobby for superiority today, the political climate has led to extreme political polarization resulting to the inability of the government to move ahead in passing legislations and thereby improve America. Political parties serve countless roles in America’s government. Foremost, it needs to be said they are crucial to America’s political system. The political parties are the heart and brain of our government's body, urging people to conceive and feel different ways on different topics whether the controversy is over how money is distributed or the way immigrants should be treated or dealt with. With each party having a biased view it shows how a group can be increasingly powerful with bountiful amounts of support, names and divisions can be heard. Democrats are widely known to be liberal rather than conservative.
