Speech By Pericles: An Ancient Greek Oratorian

Pericles was an ancient Greek Oratorian who was well respected by the Athenian community. Not only was he well respected, but he gave respect and during his speech. He did a great job during his speech by expressing the need for people to care about the big picture, and not their own individual needs. Even though a war was going on around the time of the delivery of the speech, Pericle made sure he expressed the reason why they must stand together as a city, and have a desire to continue to help those around them. They are not forced to, but simply being persuaded into this. Pericle stood for the greater good for an overall country and I believe that he did a great job at expressing his beliefs, not only as a leader, but as a member of the Athenian society.

Both speakers expressed a great deal of empathy to their cities and the families of those directly affected. Although both speeches had a great impact or were powerful, they do have some differences. For instance, Pericles had a long, extensive speech because that is what was appropriate and acceptable during that era. He presented in front of those in need of hearing the speech and it was an advantage for his audience. Reagan, however, gave a short but still very effective speech because it is more modern and culturally accepted. He also had the disadvantage of having to relate his message to an entire country. Due to the nature of the population and those times, people received the message through technological advances. I believe there was no personal connection during the speech because the audience had to watch it on television or listen to it on the radio. Even though the two speeches have the differences, both speeches are good examples of how a leader should respond to a crisis
