The Future Of Money Speech Analysis

The speech that I chose to critically analyze-and the one that I felt most mirrored my interests-was a TED talks by Neha Narula, titled The Future of Money, in which she explained and established the significance of cryptocurrency technology. The thing that became most apparent to me while viewing the speech was her introduction. Since I am still a public speaking novice, and I am still discovering the things that work-and don't work-with my speaking, I've been introducing my speech with more of a direct approach. This speech showed me that extensively relating the topic to the audience creates a greater connection. While the speech is approximately 16 minutes in length, Narula spent a total of 6 minutes of the talk, about 40% of the speech, describing multiple real-life examples of how currency works today before even mentioning the word "cryptocurrency". Through her examples, she successfully conveyed to her audience that money today has no intrinsic value; instead, currency is assigned value purely based on what people say it is worth. By relating the topic to the audience, using examples like paying her taxes online and being paid through direct deposit, she was able to create a topic that the listeners can relate to, rather than having them wonder how cryptocurrency is even relevant in their lives. According to The Art of Public Speaking, "if you can relate the topic to your listeners, they are much more likely to be interested in it" (Lucas).
