Spina Bifida is a congenital defect occurring when the bones of the spine do not form properly around the spinal cord which can lead to misshaped skin around the area or difficulty walking or performing everyday activities. [1] Spina bifida comes from Latin meaning "split" or "open" spine. [2] There are mild and severe forms of spina bifida the mild occurring more often. In severe cases there are two types: Meningocele and Myelomeningocele. Meningocele can be identified by a bulge in the skin caused by fluid leaking out of the spine but it is more common to have no signs at all. Myelomeningocele is the rarest form of spina bifida.
