Spina Bifida
Spina bifida has been well known since the beginning of ancient times; however, little could be done then to dismiss the mental and physical damages that this disease causes. In the 1960’s, surgical procedures were just then beginning to be developed that could possibly repair the damage to the spinal cord and the other various parts of the lower back. Also, the development of the nervous system is the most complicated process that the fetus goes through during the growing process inside of the womb. However, it starts only a few weeks after the conception but proceeds throughout the pregnancy. The start of the growing process is most important due to the fact that the nervous system must be developed in order for the rest of the body to function correctly later. In other words, if the nervous system does not function properly neither will the rest of the body.

The genes that are mutated in the process of spina bifida were finally identified. In current studies today spina bifida and the causes of it are still being researched. Laboratory scientists believe that the diet of the pregnant women can have a great impact on the neural tube development. Also being researched if the effectiveness of folic acid on the prevention of spina bifida. Lastly, there is a study being conducted of fetal surgery. This consists of, after it had been determined that the fetus has spina bifida, going into the womb and performing surgery to reverse the process of the spina bifida development. This surgery makes it possible to fix the gap in the spine and remove the extra spinal fluids. It is also possible that it may improve brain malformations; however, there is still no guarantee that this specific surgery will correct all neurological
