The Tempest and Spirited Away are both clearly fantasy stories. They explore the effect of magic on ordinary lives that have been thrown into an experience that they didn't ask for. The two stories show us things we know aren't real, including spirits, dragons, trolls, witches and wizards. There are many similarities in these two stories which make them quite similar. Chihiro and her parents were stuck in a place they had never been to before, as were the King and the other men on the ship. Also linking to this is the loss of hope; Chihiro wasn't sure what would happen to her parents, who were turned into pigs, and the King believed that his son was dead. They both used their magic to protect their children and tend to keep them in one place so that they can watch over them. However selfish their actions were, Prospero was good all along and just wanted to take back the position that was stolen from him. Yubaba acted out of greed. As well as this, Haku and Caliban were both slaves, and were finally freed at the ends of their stories, free to go wherever they wanted without being under the command of magic that could control them. In Spirited Away, there were many elements of fantasy that were very interesting. It began at first as the spirits came into the story, and with closer analysis, there are plenty of tiny details that are unrealistic, yet very effect, that make the story very magical. Not only that, but the morals of believing in yourself and showing manners to others are quite important. Parts of real life and being humans are very well combined with fantasy and adventure. The story of the Tempest represents revenge and forgiveness, with a world of magic mixed in. Prospero used his magic to try and take back what he believed belonged to him, he wanted to become the Duke again, and punish Caliban for trying to harm Miranda.
