Spouses Point of View In the story The Lady with the Dog, the protagonist is a somewhat misogynistic married man named Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov. The story is told Dmitry’s point of view, although I believe if the story was told from his wife’s point of view the readers would like Dmitry even less as a character than they probably already do. I think if the story was told by Dmitry’s wife she would describe the pain she must feel thinking her husband is having an affair with a woman much younger than he is. In the story the wife is described as looking nearly twice as old as Dmitry, very tall, slightly shrewish, and a self-described “thinker”. It’s likely that the wife has spent many a night alone imagining and analyzing her husband’s mistress who is younger than she and whom Dmitry obviously prefers spending time with. If the story was told by the wife we would likely learn how much she hates the fact that Dmitry is never home, never makes an effort to spend time with her, and how she is at home with their children while he is off chasing his next girl for the night. I’m sure this situation would make her feel very insecure while comparing herself to the many women that flock to the “charming” Dmitry, who in reality isn’t the man he portrays himself to be. If this story were told from the point of view of Dmitry’s wife it would be a very different recollection of the series of events and it would cause the audience to view the
