Christine Lan Thi Nguyen is a practicing artist and currently a student studying at UC Berkeley to receive her B.A degree in Sociology and Practice of Arts. She is interested in collaging, drawing, painting and utilizing anything that she gets her hands on. On her free time, she loves to explore and spend time with her family, friends and love ones. Her works mostly consist of kois and she has recently been drawn to working on self-portraits and enjoys discovering the effect of colors, lines, mark making and how it interacts with a new medium. Her work was recently displayed at the Worth Ryder Art Gallery, located in Berkeley, California.
“ ‘Poor creature. Poor creature,’ said the mother and turned away to get him some food.” Reveals a change in her attitude toward Sounder. Sounder came back to the house hungry looking like a skeleton. The mother and the boy quickly gave the poor dog his food.
Petitions are, in many cases, controversial. They are often signed in protest of things such as unfair pay, civil rights, or unsafe working conditions. Oftentimes the signers of these petitions risk their jobs and their reputations. “Lyddie” by Katherine Paterson is the story of a young girl coming of age in mid nineteenth century New England. Her family is indebted, and eventually Lyddie makes her way to Lowell to start life as a factory girl, leaving behind her younger brother, sisters, and ailing mother, in pursuit of her new job.
The way I think this quote relates to Long Long After School is that Wes,is almost like inspired by Miss Tretheway’s kindness towards him. The section that states, “the things we value” I believe that in the kind doing of Miss Tretheway’s actions, she really touched his life. Although in the text it never stated that he remained kind we can make an inference; since Wes visited her grave, this shows that she had some sort of impact in his life. “We set our goals and make our decisions” I suppose that throughout the years Wes established his goals and decisions on things that are good. So ”the things we value are the things which we set our goals and make our decisions” means, in relation to the text, is that Wes really valued Miss Tretheway
Journal 3 Richard Straub’s reading, “Responding-Really Responding-to other students’ writing” clarifies ways to respond a student’s paper. At first I thought responding to other student’s writing means to reply with feedback but as I go further towards the reading it is actually more than just feedback. Certain points that I took from Richard Straub’s reading is how a responder should act as a friend rather than a teacher when responding, must not respond short and sweet, what to address in the comments and must praise and criticize. His suggestions are key strategies that must be followed in order to achieve progress as a responder. In “Responding-Really Responding-to other students’ writing” by Richard Straub’s offers ways for readers to approach a student’s paper, therefore, achieving the responders mission towards helping the writer make better decisions when writing a good paper.
Literary essay In order to find happiness and love, you must be able to be open to change. If a person is not open to change then they will not be able to compromise when they find someone to love. In the story ‘’Shells’’ by Cynthia Rylant the two main characters must change in order to find happiness and love.
Throughout the seventeenth century, conflict between Europeans and Native Americans was rampant and constant. As more and more Europeans migrated to America, violence became increasingly consistent. This seemingly institutionalized pattern of conflict begs a question: Was conflict between Europeans and Native Americans inevitable? Kevin Kenny and Cynthia J. Van Zandt take opposing sides on the issue. Kevin Kenny asserts that William Penn’s vision for cordial relations with local Native Americans was destined for failure due to European colonists’ demands for privately owned land.
Who is Doris and why is she so important? Doris is the main character in the stray by Cynthia Rylant, and she is the one who found the stray dog. Doris is kind and likes to help animals because she brought the puppy in her home. Doris also has a kind heart toward animals because most people would just leave the stray dog outside to freeze and starve which is not very kind. In the stray Doris’s dad is starting to be giving because he let the Doris keep the stray puppy.
“I’m a Mad Dog Biting Myself for Sympathy” by Louise Erdrich is a first-person point of view story, where the narrator talks about this incident of him stealing this stuffed toucan. Through the story, you can see many explains of him feeling the loss in his life, and him struggling with change. The narrator makes bad choice after bad choice; first, he steals a stuffed toucan from a store. Then proceeds to run with this large toucan, and steals a car, which he finds out that has a baby inside, then gets stuck in a ditch and leaves the car and baby behind, and then finally gets caught.
The dead dog became the major symbol of house’s alienation. The system let the injured and exhausted animal in, but did not do anything to try to improve its condition. It returned to habitual schedule that was a more important link to the past than the family’s pet. “The dog frothed at the mouth, lying at the door, sniffing, its eyes turned to fire. It ran wildly in circles, biting at its tail, spun in a frenzy, and died” (Bradbury 2).
A pit bull named Booger saved his owner, Bernann McKinney, when another dog three times his size attacked her. She had to be in a wheelchair after the accident because of nerve damage, so Booger learned how to push her wheelchair. He also opened the door with his mouth and took her shoes and socks off for her. He did all of this without being taught. When her beloved dog died, she missed him so much that she had him cloned.
A Monument to the Dead Throughout Native Guard by Natasha Trethewey there are themes of death, grief and change. These themes are carried through the collection and are present within the entire collection. These set up the mood that this collection is ultimately about change but change for the reader as well as what happens in the collection. In “Monument” we can see all these changes through a paraphrase of the poem and the sense of elongated time from the from the form and imagery of the poem.
The book, A Dog’s Purpose, follows a dog who searches for his unique purpose in life. The canine experiences reincarnation four times, and in every one of his different lives, he tries to accomplish making his human happy. In his first life, he is Toby and lives in the Yard with a woman called Señora. Toby adjusts to his life in the Yard and assumes his purpose is to make Señora smile. He comforts her and takes pride in being her favorite.
The novel ‘Nada’ written by Carmen Laforet is a twisted heart-breaking tale about a year in the life of the 18-year-old female protagonist Andrea. Throughout this year, Andrea spends in Barcelona with her relatives, she developed various relationships, both homosexual and heterosexual. For the purpose of this essay I will discuss Andrea’s highly affective homosexual relationships with her best friend Ena and her aunt Gloria and how she views and describes both woman differently. I will also briefly contrast her homosexual relationships with that of her heterosexual relationships with Pons and her uncle Román. I will begin with discussing Adrea’s relationship with Gloria, as this relationship began before her relationship with Ena did.
One of the most effective and crucial programs for women’s health is currently under attack by the so-called president of the United States, Donald Trump. In an attempt to convince the people that he is willing to stand up for everyone, including the unborn, but instead, Mr. Trump is oppressing women and taking away their rights as human beings. Without Planned Parenthood, 2.5 million men and women would be left without affordable, high-quality health care. One in five women have visited a Planned Parenthood in their lifetime. The fact that all of the care and help Planned Parenthood gives can all be lost due to something as petty as abortion services is almost laughable.
