Standardized tests are jeopardizing countless students’ mental health and future career options, as such, should be removed from a student’s requirement to graduate. Many people become so stressed that they can not properly take the test. A majority of standardized tests are also timed which hurts the students who know the subject, but read or work slowly. Standardized tests use things that are not taught in class to help spread out scores which hurts numerous schools. Another issue with standardized tests that if a student do poorly on them, they will be rejected by the colleges or jobs that they want. This puts teachers and students under a great amount of pressure to make sure the test scores are high. By using standardized tests to measure educational quality this causes several issues. For one, these tests use questions that do not pertain to things taught in school. This means students have to either know something already or it needs to be taught at home. Neither of those situations is something that teachers can help with since it is up to the student to learn. Another issue with using standardized tests is that several students get extremely stressed or nervous about the test. This automatically causes students to perform inadequately on the test. Several people who in any other circumstance would be brilliant at a subject would now earn a poor score as a result of them performing poorly on tests. This is not fair to the people who are exceptionally knowledgeable in a subject and just become stressed easily. This further proves that standardized tests are not an accurate measure of educational quality. In most cases, teachers are better suited to measure how much a student knows about a certain subject (Jouriles). They could tell officials which students can read and write and know the basic subject skills that the tests are testing for. These tests are a very poor measurement of educational quality.Standardized tests are very biased against people with a low socioeconomic status and students of color. They also discriminate against students with learning disabilities which causes them to receive lower scores than people who do not have these issues. Standardized tests are one of the ways a school districts is scored which makes the school district puts an abundance of stress and emphasis on achieving an exceptional score. This causes several of students and teachers to cheat on the tests so as to not get in trouble for doing poorly. Another issue with these tests is they do not measure knowledge or skills needed out in the real world which causes some teachers to not teach them.
