The Star of David is a 6 pointed star that represents the Jewish Religion. The Star of David was used for centuries and in many cultures before becoming the symbol for Judaism, and being called the Star of David or the Magen David (Yehoshua, 1). One of the earlier times the Star of David was used to represent Jews was when Jews were emancipated during the French Revolution, many of the Jewish communities then used the Star of David as an emblem to distinguish their communities from other communities (Shnidman, 1). “It was only about two-hundred years ago that the Star of David become the symbol for the Jewish people.” (Yehoshua, 1) The Star of David is supposed to represent King David’s shield or the emblem on it (Levine, 1). Some people believe that the top triangle is pointing to God and the Heavens and the lower triangle points down towards the real world (Levine, 1). Other people believe that the triangles are intertwined to make the triangles inseparable, like the Jewish people (Levine, 1). In the beginning of Judaism, the Star of David appears in some Jewish artwork, but it is not originally used exclusively as the symbol for Judaism (Levine, 1). The star was adopted as the symbol for the Zionist movement but it was still not strictly the symbol for Judaism (Levine, 1). It is now used on the flag of the state of Israel and many people associate it with the Jewish Religion (Levine, 1). The Star of David was used during the holocaust to persecute the Jews (Holocaust Badge, 1). The Jews had to wear a yellow Star of David with Jude written on it or a white armband with a blue Star of David stitched on to it (Star of David; armband, 1). “The German government’s policy of forcing Jews to wear identifying badges was but one of many psychological tactics aimed at isolating and dehumanizing the Jews of Europe, directly marking them as being different.”(Holocaust Badge, 1).
