Star Wars has captured the hearts and imagination of audience members for decades. Star Wars is known for its epic space battles, characters, and the great story of the trilogies. One of Star Wars key aspects is how it blends the two genres of science fiction and science fantasy. Science fiction often deals with technologies or societal and environmental changes that could exist now or in the future; while science fantasy will incorporate ideas of magic and the supernatural alongside more futuristic and technological elements. Throughout the Star Wars original trilogy, there are many different places where there are different elements of science fiction incorporated into the films. One of the largest similarities between Star Wars and science fiction is the futuristic universe with all of the advanced technology. Like many different science fiction films, Star Wars takes place in space and uses spaceships as the main form of transportation. Spaceships are a staple of science fiction; they are something that could be made in the future with the future's advanced technology. More technology that Star Wars shares with other science fiction films are the laser guns and robots that are prevalent throughout the films. Laser guns are another technology that could be created which places them firmly in the science fiction category. The biggest thing that defines Star Wars as a science fantasy film over a science fiction film, is the Force. In many fantasy and science fantasy works there is some mysterious or magical force that can affect the world around it. In Star Wars, this mysterious force is called the Force and is used by the Jedi and the Sith to affect the world around them. In the original trilogy of Star Wars, the Force is used almost like a magic power, like in other fantasy films such as The Lord of The Rings. In The Lord of The Rings, Gandalf can use his magic to see prophecies of the future, this is like how Luke and Darth Vader use the Force to prophesize about what will happen in the future in Empire Strikes Back. The Force also fits a fantasy description because it does not have any possible explanation for its existence. Without an explanation for it to exist, it could not be part of science fiction, so the Force must be fantasy. Another thing that makes Star Wars science fantasy is the number of things that go against the laws of reality as we know them. One of the most obvious things is that spaceships make a sound as they fly through space. Without air, spaceships would not be able to make any sound waves, meaning there would be no noise.
