On Thursday, October 12, the PREFACE Planning Committee held a viewing of the movie Moonlight in the URC Greatroom. The room was filled with students as each of them chose a seat to watch the movie. The award-winning movie was about a young African American and his struggle through his life. It started off with Chiron as a child and showed how difficult his life was living in a single parent home and constantly being bullied by his peers. His mother, a drug addict, neglected him and instead still all of her attention on when she would be able to get her hands on another drug to satisfy her needs.
The movie Big Night was released in 1996 and directed by Stanley Tucci and Campbell Scott. It tells the story of two immigrant Italian brothers, Primo and Secondo, who are desperate to try and keep their restaurant in business in order to live the American dream. The movie focuses on one night that could make or break their business. An important scene in the movie is the very last one, from 1:40:39 to 1:45:30. The use of silence and camera angles in this scene conveys the simplicity of food and how it is a force that brings the two brothers together, reconciling their differences and highlighting the power of food as a unifying element.
In a time when racists and homophobes have been empowered by the recent election of fellow racist Donald Trump, proper representation of marginalized experiences in art have gained increased importance in how we perceive and empathize with others. The sharing of experiences through art helps with consciousness-raising and the spreading of knowledge among those of different experiences. After watching the video “Candles in the Sun” there are many social problems that are portrayed throughout the video not only by the images portrayed but by the lyrics as well. Miguel often refers to many religious aspects throughout his video by the lyrics the mentions in the beginning of the video. Miguel portrays this by using certain images throughout the video such as the images of women in veils and Muslim references and the Muslim practices. I believe Miguel is trying to touch base on Religious based discrimination which is a really big issue we struggle with today in our society. We look at the Muslim community differently based on their religion by what we think have been told to believe about Muslims and their religion and their beliefs.
In the story The Glass Roses by Alden Nowlan, Stephen struggles with figuring out if what he thinks is beautiful is right or wrong based on the perceptions of people around him. Beauty can be held in many things such as memories, or ideals passed onto us from our parents. Generally speaking, one can see beauty in anything. The “Starry” Night Sky: Light Pollution, Peter Lilic 9.2 Introduction: When we were born or decided to start something new we were told to “shoot for the stars” but soon there will be no more stars to shoot for due to light pollution. Light pollution is made from man-made structures such as light posts that light up the night sky, blocking our view of space or the stars. Light pollution is also referred to as ‘skyglow’ which denotes from ‘glare’ which relates to ‘light trespass’. Light pollution affects us as young adults as our perceptions of the night sky changes drastically as kids nowadays will never see the milky way as light pollution is very hard to reverse and as a result, will affect future generations unless we try to make a difference. Light pollution not only affects humans but whole ecosystems of animals including but not limited to sea turtles, reptiles and nocturnal birds.
Similarly, we have physical beauty, which can be a person’s outfit, cars, house, or complexion, and inner beauty can be your personality traits, your habits or even your sense of humor. The time we live in physical has change some many ways. The definition of beauty keeps on changing based on what every person see you, what you have or personally. One may be beautiful from the outside, but beauty lies within the person not outside. Even if the person is an epitome of beauty, an appalling personality will erase any type of loveliness they have on his or her face.
