Essay for MSc Aerospace Engineering The engineering field is becoming more challenging for recent society. The perpetual need to improve existing technologies, especially transportation, has pushed engineers into developing more efficient, yet more environment-friendly, aerospace technologies. Looking back, I think my interest in science and engineering, especially in aerospace, began when I was 5 years old. When I flew, I always chose the window seat, as I could see what the airplane engines and wings performed during flight. My father, who also graduated from the mechanical engineering department, always explained about the parts’ movement - the extending of spoilers during takeoff and landing, the opening of thrust reversers panels during …show more content…
Therefore, I intend to take power and propulsion as my specialization. If I am admitted to the program, I would like to take combustion research as my thesis. Combustion in aircraft engines always fascinates me, as the combustion in relatively small generators (compared to the size of the whole aircraft) can generates not only the aircrat thrust, but also all the electricity required to navigate the aircraft. Thus, in accordance to what I have learnt during my bachelor degree, specifically in the Power Plant Engineering course, my idea for thesis is to analyze and boost the efficiency of a combustion. Combustion in aircraft engines is very complex as it depends on several factor: the engine’s aerodynamics, the design and materials of the engine, and the fuel used in the process. I am specifically interested in the aerodynamics/material aspect of a engine: the efficiency of a combustion based on the engine construction. Firstly, the initial design of an engine must be analyzed to determine the airflow behavior in its core as well as in its bypass region. The behavior will then be used to analyze the engine’s performance and efficiency enhancement possibility by redesigning the aerodynamics and combustion process. Additionally, a redesign of the existing engine’s construction may be proposed. Subsequently, we must also check the limitations (e.g. operational temperature range, weight, price, etc) of the material used to determine the feasibility of the new design. This thesis will be beneficial in augmenting efficiency and performance of aircraft engines, and to the Aerospace engineering as a whole. Also, our research/thesis will surely be a strong basis for other future research on the aircraft power and propulsion
