Throughout the history of the United States, many significant figures and groups have taken stands for what they believe in. Perhaps one of the most overlooked, yet successful of these groups is the environmentalist and conservation movement. Just over 150 years ago, a movement sparked within a Scottish-American immigrant named John Muir. He pledged to dedicate his time to standing up for and protecting the environment. Muir was only the beginning of this powerful movement, as he helped to make way for the movement in national politics.

The two main political parties have their party platform statements that include their own viewpoints on some of these issues we face. The scientific fact behind global warming has been supported over time, and we see as a basis, the Democratic Party tends to accept the science behind climate change and embedded these ideas into their Party’s platform. While the Republican Party might not as a whole, reject climate change; however, the Republican Party tends to question or just reject the science behind climate change.
The environmentalist movement began simply to protect wildlife from the greed of corporations, like stated by author, John Muir. Farmers began to use techniques that mirrored the same, environment-damaging business tactics as corporations (which encouraged heavy amounts of chemicals to be used to catalyze production). This caused environmentalists like Wendell Berry to speak out against the chemicals and tactics used, developing the environmentalist movement. The biggest shift in the movement happened when society realized its impact on the environment. Authors like Rachel Carson urge humanity to preserve the environment by outlawing the use of chemicals.

Environmental racism Have you ever heard of or considered the concept of environmental racism and what role it plays in the lives of Afro Americans? Well many colored families live in a ring of oil refineries because they have no choice based on their income. Many people such as Henry Clark, who would cover his nose run in his house because of refineries would burn off excess gases sending energy waves and black smoke in the air. This might describe as environmental racism, which is placement of low income or minority communities near pollution sources in hazard environment which can be displayed by the fact that it is detrimental to health, have an impact by income and proximity to pollution.
