I became interested in becoming a therapist shortly after graduating high school. I have always been told that I`m a great listener and many people come to me for solutions to their problems. Being able to help my friends and family with their problems is something I love to do. I have experienced many family members, friends, and along with myself with needing therapy. There is various forms of treatment people can receive in therapy, one being marriage and family therapy. Before becoming a marriage and family therapist there is many years of educational requirements. There is a few different majors you are able to pursue to become a marriage and family therapist but one way is first getting a bachelors in social work. Earning a master’s in psychology is the next step. Some of the required courses in your masters are: marriage family studies, systems theory, research, professional ethics, human development, appraisal of individuals and families. You must have at least a thousand hours of direct client contact in marriage and family therapy. The last step is passing the AMFTRB examination for licensure requirements.
Marriage and family therapist are there to treat many different individuals, couples, and families. Some cases they deal with clients with depression, marital problems, anxiety, individual psychological problems and child-parent problems. Using many different techniques and tools help evaluate family roles and development. Marriage and family therapy is usually a short-term treatment (around twelve sessions). When picking what career I wanted, I didn’t go by the “highest paid job”, I picked what makes me happy and what I wanted to do. Marriage and family therapist don’t make terrible money but it’s not the highest paying job out there. From 2014 to 2024, employment for marriage and family therapists is projected to grow fifteen percent with around 31,400 more jobs available. More people now have better access to health insurance which the law now requires insurance plans to cover treatment for mental health. Many mental health centers and other counseling facilities will hire more marriage and family therapists due to the increased demand. The median pay rate in 2014 for marriage and family therapists is $42,250 per year or $20.31 per hour, with around 168,000 jobs.
