Most people think cheer is not a sport, but they are only half true. All-Star cheerleading is considered a sport because you have to compete against other teams, and travel to places as far as Europe or Asia. Sideline Cheer, however, does not compete and is not technically considered a sport. Depending on what type of cheerleading it is, cheer can be considered harder, and more dangerous than football and basketball. “In high school cheer or sideline, it can be a lot of waving pom poms and doing back tucks and front handsprings.
Throughout this portfolio, I examine issues for multiple athletic programs from an operational position. As a head softball coach, I was ultimately in charge of all logistics on and off the field. This includes the founding beliefs for the programs. While this chapter is written in regards to a softball programs, I believe that the mission, vision and my style are all adaptable to other sports. The philosophy must be embodied not just by a head coach, but the staff, players and extended community surrounding the athletic program.

First and foremost, competitive cheerleading is a sport because the athletes compete against other teams in their division to win the top spot. Similar to other sports teams, cheerleaders have big competitions that they have to prepare for. It may not seem like it takes hard work but the effort that is needed throughout the 2 minutes and 30 seconds of the routine is very great. For example, winning US finals and making it to Worlds is every cheerleaders dream but without all the other competitions leading up to it, there is no final competition. Not only does winning take an amazing routine but also it takes dedication from the entire organization.
An Argument for College Sports Ever since I can remember I have been a die-hard Oklahoma fan. No doubt this is due to my father’s love for team, which was passed down by his father. I guess it runs in our family, because every Saturday during football season most of my is family huddled tightly around our TV watching the game. Within the last two decades, collegiate athletics has experienced enormous financial profits lighting the debate that the student-athletes’ in the larger revenue generating sports should be entitled to a share of the revenue their sport creates for their school program, the NCAA, and any other commercial purposes. As a result of the economic prosperity commercial enterprises are experiencing because of the rapid growth of college athletics within the television industry and social media, the NCAA is being forced to potentially alter what it stands for and certainly what is most valued in intercollegiate athletics being the preservation of amateur status, maintaining a healthy competitive balance, and the promotion of the educational missions
My passion for track and field began with a Nike advertisement. At age ten, I opened the newspaper to a two-page spread of the hometown distance running legend Steve Prefontaine overlaid by a paragraph of inspirational copy. It concluded asking, “Where is the Next Pre?” The story of his small town Oregon roots, gutsy racing style, and ambition to be the best resonated with me like nothing ever had before. I told myself I was the next Pre, and then tore off for my first run through the streets of Eugene, Oregon – “Tracktown USA”.
