College athletes like most employees work countless hours a week, miss many school days, and put themselves at risk for injury on a daily basis, but unlike regular employees they do not receive paychecks. NCAA players are compensated for their contribution to their universities through scholarships. It is true that most scholarships cover tuition, and room and board but many fail to realize the many other expenses a college athlete may face. These players are working for a multi billion dollar industry which is exploiting them for their talents and they should be paid fairly for their contribution. I mean they are getting a free education right? Wrong. The education is illegitimate they are exploited for their talent and what they can bring for the team at these major schools. The NCAA has even been quoted, “It is not our job to ensure educational equality”. You will have students like Ron Hormer who formerly was the running back for the University of Iowa taking classes like water color and bowling, which there is absolutely nothing wrong with, but you can not build a degree off of these classes. Homer wanted to pursue a degree in psychical education, which he did not complete. In fact there has been countless athletes come forward about the illegitimacy of their education. These star basketball and football players are given an advisor upon their arrival to the university, the advisor then points them to the much easier classes to ensure they keep their grades up and are eligible to play. The advisor typically will enroll the student in “Paper Classes”, classes that never meet up and only require a paper at the end of the semester. If the athletes do complete college, which many don’t, they are ill equipped and rather then earning a degree they are given on in exchange for their athletic
