Should college athletes be paid? The answer is yes! This essay will be proving why that answer is correct. College athletes should be paid due to many reasons. This essay discusses one of the main two reasons college athletes should be paid plus a look at an objection on why they should not. There are many points to this debate but the supporting side has more evidence on why they are right. The objection has to do with athletes receiving scholarships as their form of pay. Even though most college athletes receive scholarships, they should still be paid because they bring in a lot of money for their university and they dedicate most of their time to their sport. This is a great point but there are reasons that it is not a valid argument. One reason is that scholarship money most of the time does not even cover all of a student’s tuition. Greene states, “They have scratched and clawed their way into a college environment where they shed their blood, sweat and tears to be successful for a program where they get nothing but a scholarship in return. They cannot use a scholarship to help pay the bills, help their parents or pay for any other expenses that come their way. In the same report from the NCPA, they found that the average out of pocket expenses for each full scholarship athlete was $3,222 per year.” This leaves most of the college athletes on the verge of poverty and some have even reached poverty. Scholarships have been a sort of pay for play for years for these athletes, so that other payment was avoided. This is totally unfair to these players. While the coaches are receiving millions and experiencing nothing but luxury, along with other staff in athletics, the athletes are receiving scholarships as a form of trade.
