Family History also is positive for rheumatoid arthritis (Inflammatory changes in the joints causing pain), so we had serology (scientific study of blood or other bodily fluids) run for the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (the rate at which red blood cells settle in one hour used to detect inflammation associated with conditions such as infections, cancers, and autoimmune diseases), and looking for presence of Anti-Nuclear-Antibodies (found in patients whose immune system may be predisposed to cause inflammation against their own body

Lupus is the fourth leading cause in disability for women. 38% of Lupus patient has been forced to stop working due to health complications from this disease. I joined because I wanted to understand the community that I would be taking part in for the entirety of my undergraduate degree. The community itself was within Central Valley, California, which was also known to be largely medically underserved and economically disadvantaged. I was able to witness this firsthand, as a college student focused on pursuing medicine, the impact of healthcare disparities, and social determinants of health. These experiences have instilled in me a commitment to serving and empowering marginalized communities. By actively engaging with other campus-based organizations and promoting health education initiatives, I aspire to contribute to RFU’s community outreach efforts and foster positive change in the communities

I was initially exposed to the field of osteopathy at the end of eighth grade when I visited the Queens Hospital for appearance of skin rashes. Unlike other physicians, I had seen previously regarding this condition, the osteopathic physician treating me at the moment did not dismiss me with just another ointment. Instead the physician took a detailed history and tried to investigate the underlying causes of the rash, not just my symptoms. Due to the physician’s reconnaissance nature, I was able to receive a correct diagnosis. Even though the rashes turned out to be from bed bugs’ bites, the physician’s approaches to medicine inspired and motivated me to further research the field of osteopathic medicine.
Picture in your mind a rheumatoid arthritis patient:Let me guess : elderly women, hair gray or graying, right? It is with great enthusiasm that I write this letter to give my highest recommendation for Toufiq Khan. As an Internal Medicine Physician at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, I have had the opportunity to see many pre-medical students over the years. Rarely do I have the opportunity to work with a student talented, ambitious, compassionate and empathetic as Toufiq Khan. At our first meeting, I had the opportunity to observe Toufiq in a medical situation where the patient had a cardiac arrest. Toufiq was there to draw blood cultures when the patient started to code.
I was overjoyed, as I had just made the Carmel Select travel lacrosse team, which I had worked tenaciously hard to make during the winter. Throughout this stretch of time however, I was experiencing sharp knee pains in my right knee every so often. After an x-ray of my knee and an MRI, I was officially diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans. As time went on, more and more plans began to unravel turning an original three-month absence from physical activity, to a yearlong ordeal.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) materializes when the immune system has an overreaction making rheumatoid arthritis an immune-mediated disease. Rheumatoid arthritis results in the teardown of articular cartilage, which is the smooth connective tissue at the end of bones where the bone and joint meet. Common points
Since my results from the many assignments we have completed for this class ( Strong, Interest Inventory, MBTI) direct my interests and talents towards the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field, I decided that interviewing an individual from my previous job position would be the most beneficial for this experience. This last summer I was an engineering intern at Autocam Medical, a manufacturing company located in Kentwood, primarily focused on producing a variety of high precision items for the health industry. In this employment environment, I am constantly working with experienced engineers, machinists, and production management personal so I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to broaden upon my career
