While surviving through your daily life, have you ever come across an opportunity to travel to a hidden pocket of the universe? These opportunities are few and far between, and most people seem to let the chance pass by. Whether it be not knowing what could come out of it, or being afraid to step up to the plate, the moments go unnoticed. However I seized the chance to visit the “hidden pocket” of the universe called Philmont Scout Ranch. Over the years the scouting program has enabled me to have many of these “opportunities”, however this was different. Philmont is a gigantic area of land in New Mexico where scouts and scouters alike hike for 10 days on the trail living off nothing but pre-packaged food and what they carry in their packs. The trip not only served as a major milestone in my scouting career, but as a key turning point in becoming an adult. …show more content…

While on the trail, I had to take responsibility for myself. Not only does this include doing my own laundry and making my own food, but also searching deep inside myself to persevere through tough situations. This whole idea of forcing yourself to continue even in the most challenging of situations describes parenthood in a nutshell. As an individual I have always been involved in many programs and activities that have allowed me to become a very cultured person. However nothing even compares to the duties carried out in order to keep a family running. After my Philmont experience I learned that I could help ease some of their responsibilities such as taking out the trash and doing my own laundry. Although that this did not totally take away all of my parents daily tasks, they did not have to worry about a few simple jobs that I could do for
