Marcus is 11 months old and his family is homeless. They live in different shelters each night and walk around the community during the day. Marcus’s parents love him very much. In this scenario, in regards to the Bronfenbrenner (1979) Ecological Model, Marcus’ parents are meeting irreducible needs of microsystem of parents. Although they are homeless, they give unconditional love to Marcus which means they are building relationship as parents. However, there are many challenges that Marcus’ parents would face due to their status of homelessness. First and most importantly, even providing the basic necessities of life which is food, clothing, shelter is difficult in their situation. Secondly, microsystem of health care services cannot be fulfilled because in order to access health care service, a person needs to have a valid health card. In order to obtain the health card, a person needs to prove residency, identity, and have valid citizenship document or immigration document. As a homeless person, it is not possible to proof the residency and also extremely difficult to proof their identity because often times homeless people do not possess any of their identification documents. For instance, there are many resources available such as drop in consultation programs and trainings. Moreover, I have previously took a course called ‘Homelessness in Canadian Society’ at Ryerson which has taught me that advocating for people who experience homelessness starts from learning and having awareness about them and sharing my knowledge with friends and family. Also need to listen to the stories and understand the different situation that each family is facing is crucial for anyone who is working closely with children especially as an infant mental health
