Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Kids :Summary In “Our Tired, Our Poor, Our kids”(2001), Anna Quindlen claims that “There are many homeless mothers and children”(332).Quindlen addresses this issue by needing to find homes for many children the past month (“thousands”) ,as well for those families that wait by their belongings until found a room to sleep. The population of homelessness people isn’t decreasing it’s increasing rapidly. She reveals these problems in order to inform people the outrages numbers of homeless families ,and also “explains some of the effects of homelessness on children,emphasizes the importance of affordable housing,and touches on the effects of welfare reform on homelessness”(329).
Almost everyone has seen a man or woman begging for money at the corner of a highway intersection. A sign usually reads “homeless, need food,” but what brings so many of these people to the corner of a street is quite a controversial topic. Middle-class citizens may lose their job and their home. Similarly, a hardworking citizen may lose his or her apartment due to a new owner who enforces a higher rent. Homelessness can affect anyone, even the middle-class, without the need for drugs and alcohol.
In “Homeless on Campus” author, Kingsborough Community College English Department Instructor, Eleanor Bader explains the increasing amount of homeless students and ways the public can help get them into various necessary living situations. Bader has two main audiences whom she is addressing. The first audience is homeless students. This report helps homeless students feel as if their voice is being heard and that they are not the only ones going through this. The second audience is teachers and college faculty members.
The source type is secondary, with the primary information coming from multiple accounts and censuses. In the conclusion from the study, the results help create demographics and accounts of the homeless, revealing many of the causes and factors that the homeless makeup. Although the results coincide with typical homeless behavior and issues, the guidelines of the program fail to reveal information about all homeless individuals. This study puts focus on mostly rural families, who are desperate to seek any sort of help; not accounting those who refuse to seek help and/or those stuck in urban environments. People who are homeless encounter much ridicule in our society’s. The stigma homelessness carries have in some ways devastated the dignity of so many of whom have fallen victim. One might think that the homeless had been involved in some misdeeds that ended them up on the streets or assumed that laziness is the culprit and have resolved to panhandling. We attempt to justify our responses by rehearsing why our need is greater or suppose that whatever means given would not be used for purposes intended and so we talk ourselves into or out of meeting the needs of others.
As time goes on, the rate of homelessness rises as the population rises. Homelessness then was mostly caused by a family’s history of being homeless, drug abuse, mental disorders, and tyrannical leaders forcing his people into poverty. In modern times, several organizations are now trying to end homelessness by building cheaper housing projects more affordable to the poor and homeless shelters; these projects usually cost a fair amount of money.
The social issue that I picked is homelessness. Homelessness is a real issue, even if we don’t always see it. Homelessness doesn’t just mean you don’t have a roof over your head, it means you don’t have food, a good education, a healthy lifestyle, or a warm place to sleep every night. Out of all the characters from Outsiders the one that appealed to me the most was two-bit because of how silly he is throughout the story. Two-bit was always the one to cheer people up when they were down and he could also get tough when he needed to be tough. Compared to two-bit my least favorite character is dally cause of how violent he is throughout the story he was always either tormenting or threatening someone and that just never appealed to me. In outsiders I have always felt like i related to Ponyboy the most cause of his love for books and sports.

I am witnessing a shift from the image of ‘homelessness’ being a physically dirty, pan handling, poor, uneducated individual who does not have a physical home for shelter. Initially, I failed to recognize that ‘homelessness’ can be a temporary state on can live in. Not all homeless people are homeless by “choice”, sometimes people are homeless by “force”.
The sociological imagination is thinking that is done with the realization that both the individual’s experience and the historical context which they live in must be looked at to fully gain insight about the world around them (Elwell, 2006). In other words, “the individual and society cannot be understood apart from each other” (Pyyhtinen, 2016, p. 4). The intersection of the two is where valuable information is found. The sociological imagination requires the ability to change between perspectives of biography and history (Mills, 1959). One can practice the craft of sociological thought by using the sociological imagination.
Throughout history, countries have been facing challenges which their own citizens are not well informed of the issues. Individuals in the United States place the blame for the manners of society many times onto minorities, which become the scapegoats. Due to the misinformation from the media and other sources, the solutions which stem from these thoughts are often misleading. I want to be able to inform individuals about the problems which plague the United States, but also create solutions for them. I want to put the spotlight on issues which are often forgotten.
The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. As a person who experienced homelessness and poverty at a young age, I am committed to public education. I have an interest in improving the accessibility of schooling to homeless individuals. I am familiar with the despair and frustration endemic to individuals struggling to survive. I am convinced that increasing individuals ' access to education can make the difference between despondency and hope. Homelessness has a great impact on children’s health and education.
