I chose to read the article and watch the clip “Revealing the Ugly Cartoonish Truth: The Simpsons” by Simon Benlow p. 263 & The Simpsons - "Donut Hell." I believe the video clip is not only entertaining but insightful about the flaws of society. As people we can be weak willed, and indulge in our vices despite the consequences we know full well. The video displays that people may take something seriously in the moment but as soon as that moment passes, the urgency wears off and we return to our self-indulgent selves. The video depicts the greed, gluttony, and lack of remorse our society is guilty of. As Simon Benlow states about the show, "It satirizes everything (and nearly anything) mainstream America cherishes." (Benlow, 2004) What America cherishes are the factors that degrade us, and dilute our individuality as we follow certain paths and repeat the mistakes that others make consistently. The target audience is primarily adults based on the inappropriate content and language, but children would be attracted to it based on the animated display …show more content…

One of Homer's vices is his gluttony and his favorite indulgence is donuts. If he chooses to finish a certain donut he will have sold his soul to the Devil, so he eats almost all of it, but not all. Later that night, he opens his fridge and eats the rest of the donut despite the plate having notes pleading for him not to eat it. He disobeys and finishes the remaining piece of the donut that he should not have kept in the first place. The Devil takes his soul in the meantime until the trial that his family requested. I interpret the theme as people cannot resist their vices despite the consequences they know will happen. Yet, they indulge in their pleasures with no remorse. It cannot be denied that everyone has done that at least once, although some people have more control than
