However, he seemed to use this as a defense mechanism to cope with his insecurity. As he takes up this role as the leader he begins to gain the confidence to step up and bring out his imagination, sensibility, and show his more emotional side. Through the duration of the novel, while all the characters experience some form of modification to their personal traits, Homer specifically stands out for this. He starts out as the quintessential, immature, emotionally-reserved, prank-pulling teenage boy. However, as he faces these unique and challenging circumstances he is forced out of his comfort zone.
Just before he dies he receives the final confirmation of that purpose, he dies but with a far greater cause – to save a life. Too late, however, does he realize the impact his existence made on people surrounding him. Homer’s tale is a tale of inspiration and for the generation whose parents came out of Depression and perceived life as a constant struggle. His “journey” with the Rocket Boys left an inerasable sign on each person in his community, his family (although it took him so long to understand how his father loved him for being what he was, without a touch or a word). His tale is a tale of resolution, of standing tall for your dreams, but also a story or reconciliation, which turned to be one of the most difficult things in his life.
Homer a well-known character in the book tomorrow when the war began, starts of the book being a young guy that is always joking around annoying many of the characters to their braking point but all ways finds a way out of it with his humor .But as the book continues and expands going into the minds of the character we and the characters find out that homer is a strong leader willing to do anything as he has a clear mind and a kind caring guy that likes Fiona but in unsure about it as he was all ways known as the rebel . This shows the intracat language used to describe the feelings and state of Homer before and after his death. Because of this illustration “We sense that we can never be the same people we were prior to our losses.” (Attig 134).
No one ever sees Homer come back out of the house and everyone starts to notice an awful smell coming from inside. Since it was in a generation when the law wasn’t so strict no one really looked into the situation. When Emily died people finally were let into her house for the funeral. They found Homer lying in the bed decayed. Everyone then realizes that was the awful smell coming from house.
He stops at the mill on the way for two reasons, to thank his father for helping him during the fair and to invite him to come to the launch. His father says he still has a lot of work to do so homer says all right and starts to walk away. Homer’s father calls after him that he heard Homer had met his big hero and hadn’t even realized it. Homer walks back and says that the reason his father and him don’t get along is not because they are so different but because they are so alike. Homer then goes on to say that he hopes that he can be as good of a man as his dad and finishes up by saying that even though Dr. von Bron is a great scientist he isn’t his hero.
