During the years of 1870-1916 the U.S. went through an industrial boom that manifested the country we live in today. At the time, the nation was rebuilding it’s connections back up once again making the south and the north together as one union. In between all of the changes happening nationally, there were major developments in booming cities like inventions including new forms of industrial idealization, transportation, and the uprising of electricity and along with these inventions came users who would take advantage. As for transportation, one of the major effects of industrialization in the U.S. was the creation of the steamboat.

The Industrial Revolution introduced cotton gins and steamboats. The cotton gin purpose was to separate the seeds from the fibers in cotton. According to archives.gov, “After the invention of the cotton gin, the yield of raw cotton doubled each decade after 1800.”. Steamboats were used as transportation for people and a way to ship products. According to education.nationalgeograpich.org, “…steamboats greatly reduced both the time and expense of shipping goods to distant markets.”
Before railroads, transportation was slow and relied on things like wagons and canals. But railroads are way faster and more efficient. They could carry a lot more stuff and go way farther in a shorter time. This made it possible to transport raw materials, like coal and iron, to factories where they were needed. It also makes it easier to ship finished products to markets across the country.
It was also important for factory owners to deliver goods to customers far away from where these goods were manufactured. One improvement they made to help transportation was making a system of roads. This made it a lot easier for travelling from state to state, and even allowed people to pass through the Appalachian Mountains to more Western states with ease. To elaborate, the boats, as well as the railroads and roads, would bring a wide variety of goods quicker and cheaper, which would assist farmers, towns and even plantations across the country to get their goods to a market and make more of a profit. Communication was established and would help not only with getting information faster, it would also reduce the cost of physical transit of communication. Finally, we look at the results of commercializing farming and how the transportation would forever change the way farming would be done. Families were affected by this, especially since they had to try and grow everything that needed, now they could grow one to two crops that would grow well in their area and sell what they did not need.
